Default NL Bet question

This happened at the Rio. According to my buddy who was on the floor, the action has been incredible with the WSOP in play. This was a 25/50 blind NLHE ring game.

There is about 2000 in the pot going into the flop. Post flop, the first player to bet, bets $1200. The next player to act has a big stack of chips and also a big wad of cnotes folded over with an elastic band around them.

He says nothing and tosses the wad forward. No one knows how much it is and what the hell he is doing. The next guy says "what's that?" and there is no answer and the dealer doesn't do anything. So about 15 seconds go by and the guy says "well I want to raise that guys raise so how much is it" and the guy says "that's not a raise, it's a call". They call the floor.

I'll stop here and not give the ruling which I disagreed with to see what responses I get first.

Typically, if a bet is tossed into the pot by player X with no verbal action(using chips, not cash) and it is atleast double the bet of the previous bet, and it is multiple chips, then the bet is taken as a raise. A single chip with no verbal action is always a call.

Using cash gets tricky. Personally I would go by the previous ruling, only substituting cash for chips. i.e. multiple bills is equivolent to multiple chips. However, it really depends on the casino's rules for cash play in ring games.

Why can't people just cash in their bills for chips? It's not as intimidating as one would like to think.

In my opinion its a call.

Roberts Rules of Poker
15. If you put a single chip in the pot that is larger than the bet, but do not announce a raise, you are assumed to have only called. Example: In a $3-$6 game, when a player bets $6 and the next player puts a $25 chip in the pot without saying anything, that player has merely called the $6 bet.

The single wad of cash wrapped in the rubber band leads me to view it as one large "chip".

He should have called the floor first to get the ruling and then decided to raise. I have to think it's a raise. It's at least a wicked angle shoot.

Exactly what I would have done before I made any action but the player in this game didn't.

This is exactly how my buddy ruled. He considered it one large chip and a call. The other player then raised and both the other 2 players folded.

I told my buddy that I would have considered each cnote as a single unit and the whole wad would have been considered the guys raise. I guess he got it right because none of the players were upset with the decision.

But it bothered me because I think the guy throwing the wad in was shooting an angle. He was trying to have it both ways. If everyone "thinks" it's a raise and folds he says nothing and scoops the pot. If what happened happens then he says he only called. But as pointed out by the other poster the next guy should have called the floor before acting.

I also wasn't thrilled with the dealer here. If I'm dealing, I stop the action and get the guy to commit. But my buddy said they have a lot of new dealers because of the world series and they are inexperienced and intimated by the players.

At foxwoods, in the 5-5 nl game, everyone has a big wad of bills, that game plays real deep, and the only time some1 threw in their wad..it was regarded as an All-in, for which the floor did not even have to be called as it was understood by everyone on the table.

How does this betting with a wad of money work? If i push all in on you, and you have a wad of money and chips in front of you, does the money wad count by virtue of being on the felt? Can someone just go in their pocket? I always thought games were played at table/chip stakes and if you don't have it in chips, then it's not in play.
