Default Dumbest play you made in 2002?

We all make mistakes at the table. If you play often enough, you'll make some real boneheaded ones. Here's my biggest mistake of 2002. The hand is from a 20-40 game at the Mirage.

The hand:

It's folded to me in MP and I open raise with AA. It's folded to a Mirage regular, Ben, who plays well. He 3-bets. Everybody folds back to me and I just call.

I called with the intention of disguising my hand heads-up and getting a couple checkraises in post-flop hoping Ben had KK-JJ and would flop an overpair which he will play aggressively.

The flop is: A,8,4 rainbow

I foolishly don't change my plan. I check. Ben bets. I checkraise. Ben thinks a couple seconds and folds when I've almost certainly got him drawing to runner-runner quads.

2nd place: Check-calling, heads-up, on the river, with a Royal Flush in a Bellagio 15-30 game.

I've certainly made more than one dumb play in 2002 but my favorite was when I flopped Quad 6's in a 30-60 game and there was a bet and raise to me and I 3 bet and everyone folded . Fastplayed those babies just right Yesterday, I made another bonehead play when a guy was check calling me to the river and a 3rd heart fell. Babe had 3 10's and my pal had a heart draw (which I considered on the turn). Then he checked the river and I bet only to be checkraised Bonehead play for sure. The good news is that 2002 is over and I can now play perfectly from now on Happy New Year and LGPG in '03. My biggest mistake of 2002 wasn't the play of a specific hand. Two super-live ones in the game but I just can't hit a flop and am stuck 2500 plus after 7 hours in the 30-60 game.My luck turns around and a little more than an hour later I've crawled back to $100 short of even. Then both live ones leave. The game is now nothing but regulars without a weak spot at the table - if I play my best, maybe I'm even money to a little positive over the long haul with this lineup. Rather than doing the smart thing and just going home I decide I'm running good and I can move this session into the win column - just one more small pot and then I'll go home a winner.

Do I really need to tell you the rest of the story? Another hour or so later I do go home but now stuck about $1100.

There's just no excuse. I knew better, I was tired, the game was terrible, and trust me I know all about thinking in terms of one long session and that a small win doesn't mean diddly. How many of my own rules did I violate? Let's see... 1)Don't play in a bad game where you have no appreciable edge...2)Don't play tired (especially in a bad game)...3)Always think long term and never short term...and most important 4)You know they work so follow your own goddamned rules.

first off, i like dynasty's bonehead play because it's one many players wouldnt even think about later. they would just be glad they won a pot and move on.

secondly, i made many very very bad plays this year. very bad. main one has to be playing too high (limitwise, not stoned) for my bankroll and then going broke and being out of action. second has to be playing overly long hours at bad games while chasing losses.

specific handwise, i went to 6 bets on the river w/ a K high flush w/ 4 spades on it, just because i misread the board and didnt realise the A out there was the Ac. fortunately my opponent was foolish enough to just call w/ the stone cold nuts and assume the deck was faulty or else i wouldve given him the $400+ left in front of me, certain the whole time that i had the nuts. moronic. another good one was folding the best hand (AA) on the river for one bet closing the action in a $800+ 20-40 pot. even better was folding the best hand w/ top pair in a $1500+ 30-60 pot for one bet heads up on the river, that one was a little tougher to call though. another good one is playing online despite swearing i wouldnt.

not a great year. 2003 is bound to be much better.

Default and the winner is...

i wasnt going to put this hand...but screw it...ill take the prize...

2-6 spread limit game in LV at Excalibur...it's late, and im tired. i havent actually played live for awhile. however, im playing very well in this session, EXCEPT this hand...

i have 77 in EP and raise, i get 4 callers...

flop 2 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] 9 [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] 6 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img]

i have a diamond....BB bets, i raise, button calls, BB calls...

turn....4 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img]

check, bet, both call....

river....5 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img]

BB bets....she isnt betting anything i can beat, but i look at the board...something tells me to call....but i know im beat... she can beat a 7 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img]

i look at the board again....nope...i believe her....fold...still looking at the board...hmmm...

button folds....

just before the button folds....i notice something...i misread the board... the 2 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] ? nope...that's a 3 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] !!!!

yep...i folded a str8 flush on the river like a complete, [censored], moronic idiot...

however, this hand did wake me up....and no..i didnt say a damn word....i just acted like she had a bigger flush....though my gut was churning....i wanted to crawl under the table....

couldnt believe i did that....still cant...

after the hand the dealer mentioned the best hands were the 2 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] or the 7 [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] to win....duh....

though i can laugh about it now....as bad as the players were the whole session, this was the worst play i saw the WHOLE session....

enjoy....

i did....

so...where do i pick up the award...

Default ill add another level of what i lost with this play...

in the EX...if you lose with AA or get quads or a str8flush, you get to spin a wheel....

min prize is $20....one spot on the wheel is 'triple' your next spin...and another is 'double' your next spin....

so in addition to the pot, i lost at least another $20 on top of that.....

yknow...salt kinda hurts when ya apply it yourself....ooooch!! ssssssssssssss....man that stings!!!

Playing in too many bad games. For most of us, game selection is the most important criteria.

I was playing seven stud within the first 3 months of me starting live play.

I just started poker in March.

Anyway it's a lame 1-5 game

I have 5H 10H 5d I call the $1
4th street - 7h I call the $1
5th street - 10d It's heads up at this point and the only other guy is showing 3 hearts on his board. I bet 3 and he raises it up to 8. with all the hearts I have, I have trouble believing the flush.

6th street - blank for me, other guy gets a 4th heart. He bets 5. I call

7th street - I look at my card and see a 5, so I decide to check-raise.

He re-raises, so I check my cards again - OOPS - I had looked at one of initial cards twice to think I had a full house. I only had two pair.

I fold, everyone at the table thinks I'm dumb. the guy shows a 6 card heart flush.

I felt really dumb.

Easy one for me...I went 19 bets on the river only to have the other guy show me the nuts...I held KK with the King of hearts and the board had 4 hearts. I thought that the Ace of hearts was on board but it turned out to be the Ace of Diamonds. My opponent was a stranger to our casino. As the raising war was going on, everyone at the table expected that the other guy had misread the board or that we had a bad deck with two Aces of hearts. I have never been more shellshocked than after that incident.
