Default Settle an argument, when all-in...

Is it a rule that all players involved MUST show their hole cards?

I almost got into a fight with a very irritating person that is invited to our home game. A friend of mine went all-in and got called, but did not wish to reveal his cards until the river. The irritating dude kept on insisting that he MUST reveal them because they were both all-in. I defended my friend and I said that he can choose to do as he wished, and that he's only required to show his hand at the river.

So, am I right or is he?

you must reveal your hole cards and you must do it in order based on position.

It was sort of a one-table tourney with a 20 dollar buy-in. Hmm... I thought the tourney-style dramatic hole card opens were just optional... oh well...

It's required in tournies and optional in ring games iirc. Not that it matters much, they get shown on the river anyway.

Do you retain the option of mucking in an all-in situation? If so, there's a potential benefit from not showing, but if not, no point in keeping them hidden until the end.

wtf are you talking about? no you do not have to show before showdown. the first person to show is the one who made the last action (the bettor). the caller is free to muck if he has lost the hand.

that said, home games can have whatever rules they want. the house rule is the house rule.

WRONG. in non tournament situations you dont EVER have to show. if they show and youre beaten you can just muck, although people rarely seem to nowadays, tournaments are a whole other story, you must show there.
