I'd recommend you install Zonealarm (www.zonelabs.com). Its free and pretty easy to use or if you want some extra frills you can spring for Zonealarm plus or pro, $40 and $50 respectively. There are several other good, free personal firewalls (tiny firewall, sygate) and obviously some you can pay for (Blackice and Norton).

Do you have a broadband connection like cable? If so, you might consider getting a router which also adds an additional security layer isolating you from the Internet. Linksys and DLink make some inexpensive routers and I've never had a problem with anything I've used of theirs.

These suggestions are not specific to Internet poker but are for Internet use in general.

I also use the free edition of ZoneAlarm and have found it to be effective.

Honestly, I would reccomend using a hardware firewall. I just got DSL service and will most likely be purchasing the Netgear FM114P. Hardware firewalls are nice because they don't slow down your machine. You can also use them to connect multiple computers to your DSL/cable connection, and in the case of the Netgear FM114P use it as a wireless access point. They are also very reasonably priced at just over $100.

Another bonus is that you can also filter outbound traffic which is an added level of privacy which can stop spyware, trojan horses, as well as various operating system "features" that XP has. Most free firewalls can do no outbound filtering.

"Most free firewalls can do no outbound filtering. "

Just a point of clarification - all the free firewalls I listed: Zonealarm, Tiny, and Sygate, do both inbound and outbound filtering.
