Default Nit or not?

So yesterday, ol' Pokey is enjoying his lil' vacation and sits hisself down at a 3/6 table at a tribal casino in the Phoenix area. The table had so many fish in it that National Geographic was doing a photo shoot while I played. This hand came up, and I felt like I had caught a bad case of Donkitis. How should I have played this one? Live hand, so the specifics are from my (weak and addled) memory....

3/6 B&M game, ten-handed. Table is a fish fry.

Pokey has Q [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] in MP3. UTG+1 calls, Pokey raises, Button calls, SB calls, BB calls.

Standard; raise is for value and to buy the button (didn't work).

Flop: (10 small bets, five handed) A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Pokey bets, button calls, SB calls, BB calls, UTG+1 calls.

Gah, ace! I hate those freakin' things when I've got a high pocket pair. Given my preflop raise, I figured I'd bluff at it. With three checks in front, it's at least possible that nobody's got an ace. Plus, it's another chance to take the button. Every stupid fish calls me....I hate you guys.

Turn: (7.5 big bets, 5 players) J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Pokey checks, Button checks.

Deciding that four players = an ace, I check, intending to call one or fold two. Button checks behind -- since I've got nothing to protect, I don't mind a cheap river here.

River: (7.5 big bets, 5 players) 6 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Pokey checks....

Still thinking MHING, I check, again intending to call one or fold two.

Yikes!

There are only 3 other A's in the deck (hopefully!). You're giving everyone a free look at the river based on a fear of an A out there. Worry about an A when someone plays back at you.

Seems like much more when I don't have one.

Ah, the heart of the matter. With so many players out there, I feel like:

1. There's not much worth protecting here, and
2. Any protection bets I do are going to be protecting someone ELSE'S pot. That's their job, not mine.

I'll all but ready to lay this one down, all along. Do you really think this hand is worth spewing a few more chips? If the high card had been a K, I'd be playing this one much harder, but those aces are like glue to fish -- they just can't let 'em go preflop. Given that, I feel that any time several players see a flop with an ace in it, I've got to beat a pair of aces to win the hand.

Hmmmm...sounds like one vote for "nit." Maybe two, if I count m'self as well.

I'd probably bet the turn in order to set up a free look at a showdown.

these players will call the flop with anything, you aren't necessarily behind here. though it sounds from the tone of your post like you lost

I would have done so if I had the button, but she wasn't selling it, and I was really worried about a check-raise (though from the river checks that worry seems to have been unwarranted).

Meh, the actual results aren't important; the question is whether I'm behind often enough to warrant fishification.

If this table is as fishy (i.e. loose-passive?) as you suggest, I think that a checkraise might be fairly good sign that it is O.K. to fold.

You have a great hand, here. You're behind only an A or the more unlikely 2Pair or set. No one has given you any indication that there is an A out, let alone a stronger hand. Anyone who hit the board is drawing live to 5 outs. Protection or value, you need to bet here.

Yikes, again. You don't just bet for protection; you also bet for value. Betting your pocket Q's is not spewing. Your only reason to even consider it spewing is that an A has fallen. An A is going to flop almost 1 in five times -- maybe you sdhouldn't play / raise big PPs pre-flop but should wait until the flop to see how it comes? (This should sound like particularly bad advice). Even if A's are fish magnets, I think this is very bad to essentially give up the hand when an A falls.

Hike up your skirt, order another drink, and enjoy your vacation by splashing some chips into the pot.

Easiest. Turn bet/fold (depending on your reads). Ever. But definitely value bet the turn.

OMG, I grew a vagina! And I didn't even notice....

Everybody's right, I'm wrong, and this was an easy turn to bet. If, for some reason, I miss the turn bet, the river bet would have been even easier.

Good advice, everybody. I've GOT to remember to be more aggressive with my high pocket pairs until I get some resistance.
