Default Someone please explain \"donk\" and \"fish\"

i'm relatively new to poker, but could we please do a little more work and study of the game instead of tossing people in these catagories. they're thrown around so much, I don't even know what the mean, why they're used, what help it is at all.

if i see someone start a hand with "villain was a fish" or "bettor was an absolute donk"...means NOTHING to me. then you slap up some stats based on 40 hands to solidify your claim.

the only times i've seen people use these explanations is to justify poor poker play. now, again, i haven't been playing too long, so maybe i've missed something. however, in the books i've read, no where have i seen anyone described in such a manner.

is this just me? am i being rediculous to expect more out of people wanting to play this game to the best they can? either post "no reads" or pay attention at the table. Oh, and seems kind of stupid to let someone off for the "i was multitabling so no reads really", as it's a poor excuse. not because it isn't difficult to get reads when multitabling, but if you are multitabling then you are basing your plays on a default, and you should have a solid grasp of those if you are indeed multitabling.

....but maybe it's just me.

I agree that fish is thrown around too much. Fish is supposed to indicate a poor player, who is very loose and very passive post flop. Many people use it simply to mean a bad player though.

Donk just means an idiot. This guy will make stupid plays such as calling down your aggression all the way to the river, then raising you, and flipping over nothing when you call.

Hi,
I am a winning player, but I find the "fish"-expression to be arrogant, as players may play poker for various reasons and sometimes at micro levels maybe bets just for fun.

We, who study hard to improve, is part of the minority, and hopefully it stays that way :-).

The embarrasing fact is that I had English for 8 years in school then went on to study English at the university. How many more years before I learn the basics?

I dunno, I think a read that says "villian likes to donk raise the flop" is a lot more useful than a bunch of numbers.

As far as multi-tabling and reads...yeh, it would be easier to respond to posts with solid reads, but the reality of online poker is that people come & go a lot. Thus, making a tough decision against an unknown is quite applicable to us all.
