Default The Bush Economy

If I read the numbers correctly, 750,000 jobs have been added over the last 3 months and 3,500,000 jobs have been added since March 2003 (April 2005, Current Economic Statistics, bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/ces/ceshighlights.pdf)

Growth is strong, inflation is in check, unemployment is low, and productivity is increasing.

It would be hard to argue that Bush hasnt done a great job managing the economy. I am not saying this as a partisan shill because I am not a Bush supporter and I didnt vote for him. However, the numbers do not lie.

At worst, it appears that Bush managed over a very mild recession, which could have been affected by 9/11. It is also quite possible that Bush inherited the recession from Clinton. I am not bashing Clinton as I liked his management of the economy.

Now, I think presidents often get lucky or unlucky depending on when they serve because the ebb and flow of the economy is inevitable. However, the turnaround in the Bush economy appears to be directly liked to his supply side tax cuts.

Though most of our professors claim they are not interested in working in Washington, 80% of those who would accept a policy job would prefer to work for Mr Kerry.

A sample of the population that is

a) higher in intelligence
b) has a greater demonstrated ability to apply their intelligence to analytical thinking
c) more widely read and travelled

than the average population.

What was your point again?

True enough, but you are not looking at the right numbers. The fact is that, assessed over the course of his presidency, job growth has been very slow, the deficit has increased dramatically, energy policy has been an incoherent mess, and he has potentially set us up for a very dramatic problem of currency depreciation if certain fragile equilibria don't keep holding.

The good news is that productivity has increased, but that is completely out of the hands of the president (as are, to some degree, these other things listed above of course, but signficiantly less so).

So, yeah, other than all those things, he's been great.

In all reality, fiscal policy has little to do with the economy and how it operates.

Monetary policy(made by the Fed), on the other hand, can affect our economy greatly.
