I just talked to Chris Held, an assistant tournament director for the WSOP. He told me that the WSOP main event will be capped at 6600. All other WSOP tournaments will be capped at 2300. He indicated that none of the tournaments are close to selling out yet. He also told me that the online poker rooms have not registered their qualifiers yet.

God - Pokerstars has almost 500 already - if the online guys don't get a moveon, they could be stuck with a lot of empty promises.

FWIW, it was capped at 2000 last year, too.

they're not capping. Why would they reject free money? They'll make 4 heats instead of 3 if they can get extra 2200 people.

[/ QUOTE ] Harrah's has said it is capped at 6600 since just after last years WSOP when they announced the move to the Rio. I'm sure if you bust out Google you can find the references. I presume they'll do alternates though. |

It is capped at 6,000 plus 600 alternates. You can go to their website for verification. They will NOT add a fourth first day. http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/wsop.asp

Unless they decreased starting stacks they couldnt do this because that would force them into making a Day 2a, and Day 2b, hence further lenghtening the tourney, I will promise you this will not happen. ~Justin |

This is very old news.
Think about it this way: 1. They made an initial estimate based on trends in the # of entrants as to roughly what the size of the field would be. 2. They scheduled 3 "Day Ones" to accomodate this field 3. There will be 200[10h] or 222[9h] tables per day if the event is capped. That's a lot of dealers 4. Other poker rooms will be open during this period 5. The WSOP is the most prestigious event in poker. Do you really want them to hire/train a few dozen extra dealers for the first few days? This would raise the entry fee and arguably cause an assload of dealer mistakes on day 1. 6. With all the spectators, they may not have enough rroom to comfortably accomodate what has become quite a tourism spectacle in LV. In short, they're not 'throwing away money' by capping the field. These things take a long time to plan, and it's easier and cheaper to do things well in advance. -adam |

There's been talk that the first three "Day 1" days will start 11 handed. Also, I'm sure there's going to be quite a few dealer errors anyways, because they're going to try to throw in a few break-in dealers at the start.
