Default \"i love stealing from limpers\"

This is a quote from schwza in a recent post, and I think this topic deserves it's own thread.

I haven't had much success stealing from limpers. Often I get at least one call, which means that I'm playing a big pot with a mediocre hand. So the investment required for stealing, especially if you include a continuation bet if you get a call, is quite a bit more than stealing blinds.

Obviously one should be selective in executing this move since there is more risk and more reward than stealing blinds. Maybe my selection process needs some work. Therefore I would like to hear from others if they have any general prequisites to making this move. For example:
(1)Limpers have limp-folded previously.
(2)Limpers have smallish stacks but are not desperate.
(3)Hero is on the button.
(4)Hero has a big stack.
(5)Hero's image is tight or unknown.
(6)Bubble time.

I don't mean that all of these conditions must exist, but more is definitely better.

Am I on the right track here? What other conditions do you favor? How about specific hands? Feel free to poke holes.

Large stacks that limp in frequently often are messing around trying to steal the pot postflop and they can be ideal targets preflop. However, it has to look to them like you really have a hand or they can easily steal back from you.

Early position limpers are likely to have real hands, and you generally don't want to steal from them. Short stacks are sometimes good to steal from, but be careful with a limper with less than 12 BBs, since they may be limping because they would be pot committed if they raised. Be careful with limpers if there is not much limping going on, as they may be trapping. A late position open limp may represent a very marginal hand or a big pair.

That thread is yet another reason why I am very cautious about punishing limpers. I am looking for spots to ratchet up the aggression as the tournament moves to later stages so that I can keep accumulating chips.

Other experienced posters have implied that stealing from limpers is a standard weapon in their arsenal, which is why I am looking for some validation to my approach.
