Set hand
NL 3/6 blinds, 6-handed. Table is fairly aggressive.
UTG ($790, decent regular) raises to $20 UTG+1 ($550, decent regular) calls. Hero in CO ($640, decent regular) with 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 7d[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] calls. Flop 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] UTG bets $45, UTG+1 calls, Hero makes it $150, UTG calls, other folds. Re: Set hand
I don't think you should have checked the turn. 1/2 pot bet?

Re: Set hand
Ok, everyone seems to hate checking the turn. Say you half-pot it on the turn, and UTG checkraises all-in. Move?
I guess I was sort of trying to induce a bet from overcards that hit on turn/river or an overpair who might think he's good at the end by underrepresenting my hand on the turn. In addition, if UTG had a bigger set or flopped the straight (which I'm pretty sure he has something pretty good after calling the flop raise--the "decent" players were value-betting the hell out of the bad players but playing looser preflop and fairly ABC/slightly-tricky post flop against each other), I can avoid losing my stack. Perhaps thinking about being beat on the flop is too paranoid. Results (in white): UTG turns over QQ for set of Q's and takes pot As it turned out I think betting the turn might have resulted in a tough decision, perhaps putting more money at risk. Nevertheless, reviewing the play, I believe betting the turn is probably best. Would you bet the turn 100% of the time here? |

Re: Set hand
Yes Yes and Yes. A pair of tens would call your raise on the flop and a pair and a ten almost certainly would too; both those hands would love a free card. If get a big checkraise laydown your hand, slowing playing on that board is absolute disaster and 98 is such a common hand that even if you fill up you may still lose. Even though hand is not a lock, I think betting big on the turn is the only play. You want to make all those drawing hands pay and if a big check raise comes you'll know exactly where you at. A weak bet gives odds to the draws and maybe a spunky overpair or top two may checkraise adding an extra dilemna to your situation, and you have to fold to the check raise without a read, imo.

Re: Set hand
I like a slightly bigger raise on the flop but that's not really a big deal.
When you get called by UTG, I think you have to put him on an overpair. It's unlikely he has 10-J since he is the original pre-flop raiser. If he has 88 or 99 or QQ, take your lumps....I'd lead out for $250 on the turn and call an all in raise since your bet pot commits you. If you get called on the turn, get your money in on the river. |
