I don't have any video poker books, but I learned to play Jacks or Better from the Wizard of Odds and from the excellent program WinPoker ($30). While there may be good books, I recommend buying WinPoker for your friend. It has modes in which you can test yourself. It's nice to be told that even if I don't play perfectly for a given jackpot level, my mistakes cost me less than 0.1% on average.

the first and only book you'll probably ever need is Video Poker - Optimum Play by Dan Paymar (you can buy it on this site). then practice on WinPoker software, maybe buy a set of portable strategy cards, and you'll be golden.
