Default Should I make a move for the pot?

What's the standard play in this situation when it's checked to you on the flop (assuming you have no real reads)? How much do you bet if you decide to make a move?

umm..You should not have been in the pot from the get go. That has FOLD written all over it. I dont call for anything over 2x the BB. 3x the BB is enough to fold your 88.

First of all, I would fold this preflop. With only 850 more behind him there's little to win even when you flop your set. Second, I'd check the flop and hope for one of the two eights remaining in the deck.

I agree that my pf call was not that great. However, a move on the flop seems reasonable to me. Do you think I'll run into a check-raise too often to make a bet profitable?

Even if he only calls you'll have to give this one up. And yes, my feeling is that this will get called too often. I don't think it's a very bad move to bet 250-300 and try and pick it up though.

People generally have trouble letting their KK or QQ go even when an ace flops.

EDIT: I'll try to be somewhat coherent next time I post. Bah.

Here is the general thought. For 1 you have to think someone is slowplaying a big A..Say AK or AQ. Next if you bet and are last to act with everyone checking you are going to get less respect on your bet and people will be more willing to call thinking it's a steal attempt. And if I had KK or QQ here and you bet I would be check raising you to see where I am at. There is no way you can take a stab at this pot. Take the free card and hope to hit your set and then take their stack when they did slowplay AK or AQ.
