The Tipping Poll
I'm a person who is opposed to tipping because it is what is generally done. I believe that a tip should be a bonus to one's income for extraordinary service, and should never be expected.
Please don’t interpret my views on this subject as me being cheap, as I am a very generous tipper, when generosity in tipping is merited. Generally I’m more apt to tip a young motivated waitress/doorman/valet/ dealer who is trying to make something of themselves over old bitter bastards who made bad decisions in life and think they deserve better. If you answer c for either question I'm interested in why you think the job sucks. If you answer d for either question I'm interested in why you think they deserve to be paid more based on their job skills. Re: The Tipping Poll
Gee, great choices. Really leaves it open for a variety of viewpoints.
I think tightwad pricks like you must live miserable lives. You didn't give the option of: Its customary, and I really don't care about money that much--tipping is not where my surplus goes. It just doesn't matter that much, and people like you who make "principled" stands tend to be people who suck on a vast variety of levels. |

Where is the option: "because they did a good job and deserve it."

Re: The Tipping Poll
Every time this subject comes up I feel that the only people who respond negatively are those bitter bastards who have not made anything of themselves. Obviously it is the right thing to do to tip/help the young person who is motivated, but I can’t rationalize over tipping “i.e. $1 per hand” your average schmuck dealer.
Along with their minimum wage (let’s say $5.00 per hour) they get $1.00 per hand for 20 hands per hour which is $25.00 dollar per hour. This is a slow crappy dealer nobody wants at their table. $25.00 X 40 hours per week = $1000 per week $1000 per week 50 weeks per year with two weeks vacation =$50,000 per year Average salary for a teacher = ~42,000 per year |

Re: The Tipping Poll
Wow. Just ask those poker dealers---yeah, they all make 50K a year. Well, the slow crappy ones, the others are pulling down seven figures.
Intelligence isn't your forte, is it? And someone's personal situation, which you cannot apprehend, should hardly be the basis of your tip. For some of us it is a perfunctory gesture. For others it is gleeful. Fine, as you wish. As others said, what about good service? From, god forbid, an old person who clearly hasn't made anything of him or herself (by whatever asinie measure you employ)? Yes, clearly I am a bitter person who hasn't "made anything of my life." Your people reading skills are on par with your financial acumen and informal logic. |

[ QUOTE ] Average salary for a teacher = ~42,000 per year [/ QUOTE ] plus healthcare, plus dental, plus summers off, plus retirment... there really is no comparison, the teacher gets MUCH better compensation. however, there is no reason to tip the slow crappy dealer more than the minimum- 1$. the fact is, these people depend upon tips more than they do their salaries, getting those tips is an implied condition of them taking the job, and is a powerful tool to reinforce proper behavior- when that crappy dealer does a GOOD job, tip the hell out of 'em- they will soon be douing a good job all the time. also, it's just not cool to be a cheepskate and then accuse others that are not of 'not making something of themselves' be cool, tip like a man, or quit playing live poker, cheapskate! |
