When to call a raise from UTG when you\'re in the BB?
Hypothetical situation here: Imagine you're in the BB with an insta-mucker like 52o. UTG raises and every single player coldcalls. Am I right that you should call the raise because...
1) You're getting 19-1 to call, and 2) You'll be closing the action? If so, then what would be your strategy on the flop? And how many cold callers would you need to make this worthwhile? |

52s in a heartbeat, 52o is pretty meh. You need to hit it way hard.

But I guess that's my question... is it worth playing a longshot when you're given such great odds?

absolutley. You'll get payed off if you hit 2 pair or trips and otherwise it's a rather easy fold. If everyone calls, i'm calling 52o in a shot. I mean if 18-1 isn't good enough...what is?

Re: When to call a raise from UTG when you\'re in the BB?
im participating int he micro-limit poster challange so forgive me if someone has already posted this:
i think that while the math is good u still need to ditch it. with 52o ud have to catch a miralce flop like 552 or A34 (which is way more infrequent than 19:1) hain order to even play it..... sure ur going to flop at least a pair 1/3 of the time but your already dominated so why not just save a bet? will |

[/ QUOTE ] At 19:1, I'm calling anything. # two pair flops (using my cards): 396 # trips flops (uing one of my cards): 264 # full house flops (using both my cards): 18 Total flops: 19600 There's a 3.5% chance of one of these happening, which is only 27.5:1. What does it take to make up for it? 96.5%*(-1 SB) + 3.5%*(19 SB + Implied) = 0 --> Implied = 8.57 SB So I need to pick up about 4.5 BB postflop from 9 opponents. If one player goes to the river, that's 2.5 BB already. I think this is easily made up. I don't think I would go on for 15:1 (7 opponents, 6.25 BB to make up), but it's close. I would like more of a postflop implied overlay for those times I get outdrawn. |

Re: When to call a raise from UTG when you\'re in the BB?
Calling is a great idea on paper, and it's advocated, but the EV is a lot closer to 0 than people think, IMO. You obviously have a better than 5% shot at winning if there were no bets placed post flop, but a lot of those hands that give you your pot equity are folded way to easily (and correctly) right on the flop. YOu can litterally list the good flops for small unsuited cards like that in big pots on one hand. (two pair, trips, gutshot)

I called w/75o the other day in a live game, and decided that was as low as I'd go.
