Anybody know what kind of chips are these?

Costo claims they are "True Clay". My cousin wants to buy them and said that Costco wouldn't lie about them being clay. Can you help me convince him that they are not?

Probably can't convince him they aren't clay but we all know they aren't. A clay chip would have to be too thick to be 11.5g, they're all 10g or so. The cheapest clay chips available are from pokerchips.com, point him there and see if he still thinks he can get 500 edgespot clay chips for $140. Point him to pokerchipreviews.com too.

All in all, that set is probably worth $140 if the case is as nice in person as it looks in that picture.

I don't think Costco would deliberately lie about this. But their vendor is most likely being loose with the truth, though it's what every typical poker chip vendor is doing these days. And the merchandise buyer probably doesn't know the difference.

I can't imagine these are "pure clay" chips. But we don't get a close up picture to tell for sure. Maybe they've contracted for a million clay chips from a new factory in Korea or China. Nah...

And the 11.5 gram weight is just too fishy.

They may have "clay" as a filler but in the high end chip world clay they are not! That aside the Costco chips I've seen are better than some other composites I've handled (i.e. they weren't the super slick ones). Have hime check out Pokerchipreviews - education & Homepokertourney - chips.

Get him to order a sample and then cut it in half with a hacksaw or pliers. That should settle the question. (Watch out you don't hurt yourself when the hacksaw blade hits the metal insert.)

I use a Dremel to cut up my chips. Never had a problem chewing through the metal.
