Default 74h from SB. Too loose?

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (8 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, MP1 calls, 1 fold, CO calls, 1 fold, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (5 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, UTG+1 folds, MP1 raises, CO calls, Hero calls, BB 3-bets, MP1 calls, CO calls, Hero calls.

Turn: (8.50 BB) T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, MP1 calls, CO calls, Hero calls.

River: (12.50 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero checks, BB checks, MP1 bets, CO folds, Hero calls, BB calls.

Final Pot: 15.50 BB

I want my VPIP up. This somewhat tolerable way to play, or should I just go and stick my head in sand.

Pf is correct.

Cap the flop.

Bet the river.

PF is standard. Cap the flop, Turn is fine, bet the river.

Some people might think the flop cap is questionable, but even if you're up against a set, you're equity is right around 25%. The only time it's really bad is if you're up against a higher flush draw, and that's not very often. I think it's a clear value raise.

It might cheapen the river card for you too, which is a nice benefit.

I complete with any two suited in the small blind when playing 2-4. I don't know if this is correct, but it works out ok for me.

Completing with 74s after three limpers is fine. With the 2/4 structure, I'd do it after just two limpers and sometimes after just one.

I probably would have capped after cold-calling initially on the flop, with a flush draw and vague straight potential and three opponents. Calling isn't so bad, though, as you could be against a bigger flush draw, a set, or two pair, all of which would cut into your pot equity (though a bigger flush draw would be worst of all).

I'd probably lead the river, but if I didn't, I think I'd go ahead and checkraise. MP1 could have something like K [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], but I think you want money going in on this river, until it's obvious that someone else loves their hand.
