use a combo of adaware SE and spybot, seems to keep the system running fine.

Spybot and Ad Aware SE are cool freebees, AA SE though has no ON the FLY protection.
Spybot I am using, although if I use it for a scan, it is incredibly slow if it doesn't crash out on me.

I recommend Intermute's SpySubtract Pro though, it's got on the fly protect and reasonably priced, they removed the yearly fee BS too after I had it 3 months, the date I'd expire was suddenly GONE! It's definitions are updated frequently and it will alert you of suspicious activity via it's Venus Fly Trap technology, check it out at: http://www.intermute.com/products/spysubtract.html (30 day trial so you know exactly what it can do!) been using over a year now, all of $30, well worth it, and I am usually the tightest of tightwads on utils.

Default I reco Spysweeper

My computer got crushed by a virus and Geek Squad came out and fix it. The guy was super sharp and thought Spysweeper was the best.
