Default For those of you that believe Poker is gambling.

When I use the term Gamble I mean:

[ QUOTE ]
"To engage in any activity in which money is put at risk for the purpose of making a profit, and which is characterized by some or most of the following (in approximately descending order of importance): little or no research has been conducted; the odds are unfavorable; the behavior is risk-seeking; an unsystematic approach is being taken; emotions such as greed and fear play a role; the activity is a discrete event or series of discrete events not done as part of a long-term plan; the activity is significantly motivated by entertainment or compulsion; ownership of something tangible is not involved; no net economic effect results."

[/ QUOTE ]

If any of you believe that poker is a gambling game, given this definition, and treat it as such, please play at my table.

Bellagio. 15-30 Holdem. Everyday. Don't bother identifying yourself. Your play will give you away.

(you are taking a risk each hand you play)

an unsystematic approach is being taken; emotions such as greed and fear play a role

(ever heard of bluffing, intimidating your opponent);

the activity is a discrete event or series of discrete events not done as part of a long-term plan;

(Each hand is a discrete event. The hands you play in a session are a series of discrete events)

the activity is significantly motivated by entertainment or compulsion;

(Many people do it for these reasons)

ownership of something tangible is not involved;

(I'm not gambling my children)

no net economic effect results.

(It's a 0 sum game, without the rake)"

Hold it, hold it, hold it! I said that Poker is not Gambling to a poker professional. If you don't accept my take on things just ask any Poker Pro that you respect whether they agree with me or not.

I know what you are meaning to say... That an expert poker player, through his/her knowledge of the game and which cards tend to hold up better, can reduce standard deviation to a point where expectation will exceed it, but poker is still a game of chance in that you have no control which cards come out

and if i'm wrong, someone please correct me!

I believe that you have taken this quote out of context or not fully understood what the Author Ed Miller is saying. Ed equates Poker to a Casino Game in that the house is not the one doing the Gambling. The patrons are the ones gambling. He in my opinion implies that YOU the poker professional should treat poker the ame way and that is that you have the edge and your opponents are the ones gambling.
