Default playing drunk

i feel sometimes my style of play is pretty predictable and linear, and thus is terrible poker, since i my holdings may be easy to read to competent players. do you think it would be -EV to drink a little, not to get totally piss drunk, but enough to play a little bit more randomly, yet be aware of factors, position, probability, image, etc. to throw other people off? or would this help your table image to get more action?

i have a feeling i'm going to get flamed for making such a post...but i was curious anyhow.

I cannot play winning poker even after one beer. I also cannot think fast enough to play winning poker when I am high. So I don't do either when I play. Believe me I have tried, especially high.

Drinking will make you a better poker player like it will make you a better driver. You won't be as aware and you're overall play will be worse. Find other ways to make your game more imaginative.

At low stakes, players don't interpret their observations of you well enough for you to need to play drunk. Also, at full ring, especially limit, there isn't a lot of incentive for other players to pay really careful attention to you in the first place.

So my suggestion when you want to play drunk is to play high stakes NL shorthanded, preferably heads-up, and by the way I can help you finda game.

I can still play winning poker when I drink, but only if I restrict myself to a much lower limit than I normally play. So, that's exactly what I do if I feel like playing and having a few beers.

To think that it can help your game is foolish, in my opinion. However, if you are an alcoholic, and not drinking messes you up in some other more severe way, then maybe it would be OK to have a drink to "settle down" before you played.

Me and my close friends smoke pot and play all the time. I can't tell you the last time I have been to the casino without a doobie session before. However, I keep track of everything and take it all very seriously. I have one friend that has an easier tilt when he is stoned, but besides that we play fairly well. It might affect our game a little but when it comes to heads up we get intense and there is some serious game play going on.

Sounds like you are looking for alcohol to be your excuse to act less predictable. You don't need an excuse to do that... alcohol isn't necessary.

I am fairly new at this, but before I got more serious about the game I tried out the online stuff. I would do okay, but in my case I'd come back to my dorm room drunk, and wake up in the morning kicking myself for losing the money. One thing I found is if you aren't thinking straight you almost convince yourself that card you are chasing, or that miracle hand isn't a chase or miracle, it becomes the probable thing to happen in your mind, and screws you over. So, I wouldn't reccomend it, unless you can really control how much you have to drink and how much of an effect it has on the table.

In all probability alcohol will make your game worse. However, if you have trouble taking risks *when appropriate* a bit of sauce might help. If you just know that bluff check-raising the turn will take down the pot, but you don't have the guts, you might be more willing to after a beer. The problem is, you'll start seeing this move when it's not appropriate.

Personally I find a few drinks or getting high helps me live, but hurts me online. I suspect I am an exception to the rule. I am also extremely good at self-regulating my substances.

Edit: Also, tilt is beyond inconceivable when I'm high, because the thought of getting angry is *ridiculous*.
