Re: You play waaaaaaaaaaaay too tight n/t
Thanks for the reply, and to all those who reply subsequent to this post.
15% hands played is recommended by poker experts, Sklansky and Malmuth included, I believe. I am in line with that number. Am I misunderstanding what 15% means? |

Re: Find the leak
Ditto the "playing too tight" statements. But, if you are very new at this game, you're on the right track.
You don't hear much advice on this, but young players hit this game seeking to Win! Win! Win! In what endeavor does that work? I don't want to speak for our respected Gurus, but I've made my living this way for 24 years. I'll speak for myself. Obviously, you've read alot! That's great! I noticed from the stats above, you're not losing alot! That's great again! If you approach this game appropriately, you will learn first how to play the game and gain a lot of experience without losing a lot of money. Minimize your loses. I've advised students to play premium hands only for awhile; from all positions. While doing that, your will learn how to win money, and then maximize those wins. One cannot learn to win money first. A boxer learns to protect himself first! Therefore, the tightness of your play is a correct start. I have always believed the Gurus agree on the 15% as a baseline. Bob Ciaffone often states that as your game develops, you will expand your starting hand criteria. I don't know how long you have been at this game, but I would suggest that you losen up as your game develops. Best of luck to you! |

Re: Find the leak
Just guessing, but the numbers that seem unusual to me are:
4000 hands is not enough to be near the long term. not defending the blinds enough showdown win percentage is low, indicating you may be taking hands too far. Saving a BB on the turn or river could help you a bunch. I would say calling precentage is too high, but in micro-limits you often need to check and call medium-good draws. Read Lee Jones' low limit book. Craig |

Re: Find the leak
Where did you generate these stats from? I'd be interested in seeing other "profiles", and understanding their level of play.

Re: Find the leak
Raise first in preflop: 2.28% (84/3,686)
This number seems pretty small to me. Raising AA, KK, QQ, JJ (6 ways each), AK and AQ (16 ways each) out of all possible hands (1326) is 56/1326 = 4.22%, and this is raising strictly ultra-premium hands first in preflop. (I would guess that you would raise at least another 20-30 hands, even if you are playing really tight.) You should raise preflop more often and be more agressive. |

Re: Find the leak
I agree with the others. Looks like a weak-tight profile. Your preflop raise percentages are really low, you like to limp a lot it seems. You should open-raise much more frequently, especially in MP and nearly always in LP. You're not defending your blinds enough (ok, it is a very small sample there).
RiverBoy's post was excellent and I think he's correct in saying you're on the right track. Better weak tight than loose aggressive. Add more aggression to your tightness. |

Re: Find the leak
Good Post,
I would be interested to see how I played out. Anyway, like the others, I think you are playing weak tight. I believe with some aggression you could really come around as a player. The one thing that stood out to me is that you are losing on the river showdown a lot. As a general rule of thumb you should look for a reason to fold on the turn, and you should look for a reason to call on the river. You are obviously calling on the river a lot, but I believe that is because you are calling on the turn too often... BTW, I think it is better to be too tight then too loose when you first start playing... I don't necessarily think your starting requirements are out of whack, but I don't think you are playing aggressive enough. Just My Thoughts, |
