Big tournament wins doesn't define how good of a player you are.

I agree, but since he wrote a book on tournament poker, I think that asking about his tournament credentials is reasonable.

In the WSOP main event, David Skansky has finished in the money twice (42nd in 2002 and 37th in 1988). He also won three WSOP bracelets in the early '80s.

His reputation, or so I have read, is that of a player who conservatively tries to move up in the money and avoids risky attempts to amass chips and put himself in position to win. I read some trip report (can't remember who wrote it) where the author felt certain that Sklansky was playing so tight on the bubble that it was conceivable he would fold aces.

Folding aces is not that big of a deal. You make it sound like it's unheard of. There are many situations that arise in tournament play where this would be a +EV play.

He's not. Multi table sat to something like the PPM, you have enough chips where if you folded every hand from here on out you'd qualify. You get dealt pocket aces and someone else goes all in (stack size irrelevant), you calling? Calling here has no positive expectation, even if you win it's not going to earn you anything additional. I'm not even a tourney player, so I'm sure there's more examples.

Yeah, but the WSOP isn't a supersatellite. The pay does increase and pretty drastically as you get near first place.

e.g. T.J. Cloutier has never won the main event.
