Default 1 spot before final table: call?

10 players left in stars $25k guaranteed ($11+R)

first place pays over 10K
10th place pays ~$400

this is the first time the button has pushed outside the blinds. When it was folded to him in the small blind, I had him covered by a lot, and he pushed with K8o and beat my AT. Now he has me covered and pushes from the button. I see AK and call risking my tournament to try to get in the top 2 for the final table. Thoughts?

Ok I pick up the sarcasm, but seriously this particular tournament usually pays $1k plus to 6th and up. With bankroll conciderations and not being able to be the aggressor, I can understand possibly laying it down. If you fold here you need to realize that you have decided that moving up the pay scale is the most important thing to you and need to adjust accordingly. It is important to have a game plan, it is important to know what your goals are. I sometimes set a few goals for myself throughout a tournament (i.e. make the money, double my buy-in, 10x my buy-in, win). I then weigh these goals against each other and decide where I am and where I need to be. As I said before, I call here everytime.

I agree with Sloth. If you want to inch your way up the scale and get 5+-8th money and definitely not 9-10th then fold. If you're willing to risk 5+-9th place money for the shot at 1st then definitely call.

I say go for the win. You're ahead or 50/50 against most of their likely hands.

my goal was to win the tourney - thats why i called

however, i had the worst hand
button has 77
big blind has 66 - and wins a monster pot with a terrible 2-all in call

button goes on to win tournament

I wanted to make this post because I would like to have a follow up discussion: what do you do with 77 here on the button. Is the best play to push? I'm not so sure... If you decide to push - you probably won't be called by a hand you dominate. So if they call - you are risking most of your chips against a grossly dominated hand ... OR you are up against a coinflip situation.

Now, lets say you are up a hand that calls you and is a coinflip situation. Do you want to get all your $ in preflop - or do you want to try to see the flop first, giving the overcards 3 cards instead of 5. I was pondering what I would do with medium pocket pairs in CO or Button during the tourney and it happened to come up at the end.

Any comments?
