Default 2nd pair- how\'s my line?

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (8 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is CO with 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
3 folds, MP3 checks, Hero calls, Button calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP3 checks, Hero checks, Button checks.

Turn: (2.50 BB) 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP3 checks, Hero bets, Button calls, SB calls, BB calls, MP3 folds.

River: (6.50 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks, Button bets, SB folds, BB folds, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 8.50 BB

I'm still working on how to play/when to get away from second pair hands like this. I was hoping for a safe card on the river so I could value bet, but the Jack was a scare card. What's your river play on this one?

Bet the river. Nobody checked TP twice. It's very likely that you have the best hand.

Edit: I suppose button could have a weak TP, but I still bet for value. Just as often, he'll have just an A.

I've been getting popped a lot lately by people hitting trips and/or waiting until the turn or river to bet their hands. So when the river Jack hit, I was fully expecting J2o or something similar to speak up. This is weak thinking and I know it.

It would be strange for Villain to hold a J here unless he's really passive.

Button was one of those "tricky" type guys, that's really my only defense.

Then again, this could be looked at as a brilliant way to induce a bluff, but that's not what was going on in my head when I made the play.

I would bet the river; I don't think the J is a scare card. Villian is probably doing a typical "bluff at a paired board" play.

Even tricky players tend to bet their TP hands when checked to them on the flop.

It really isn't. Given the action, it's very ulikely that someone has a J. Therefore, you should be beating here.

It's actually results-oriented thinking. You've inadvertantly stumbled on the very reason why we say the results don't matter. They don't change the correctness of a poker line.

You really need to get in the habit of betting flops like this (as you move up levels). Think of all the good things that can happen...someone folds a hand like A9, you get a free card, you might even pick up the pot with a bet.
