I was thinking about folding the river... |

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
I would say don't call a raise as significant as that one preflop if you're reluctant to put money in when you hit a great flop like that one. I would have bet the turn, but hey, i suck so who knows.

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
umm why not bet the turn?
is it cause you were afraid of top set or wanted an extra 100 bucks (maaaaybe) from KK on the river? (hint: both are bad reasons to check the turn) folding the river is very bad, but since you posted it, you prob. lost to AAA. |

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
I dont think the river is the spot to raise, I would probably have maded a decent raise on the flop, perhaps allin.
Why such a weak line? you dont include much of a read other than that hes TAG.. Is he so TIGHT that he would only raise with AA or KK from the blinds? Would he only call a raise with AA and fold AK or AQ instantly?. no chance he is betting KQs here? |

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
I think if he lost, he lost to KK. I wouldve raised the flop and probably been all in at the turn if the villain called the flop raise.
If I only called the flop, then I would bet the turn for sure. Like someone said, dont call a 7bb raise with 44 if youre not willing to get all in when you flop a set. |

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
I think raising the flop is your best play. If you call on the flop and bet on the turn when it is checked to you a tight player will read it as a strong hand you were slowplaying on the flop. If you raise on the flop you actually disguise the strength of your hand as opposed to calling. So if you're going to flatcall the flop you can't really bet the turn, If I called the flop bet I would check the turn to induce a river bet/bluff and take it from there. If your opponent is behind you he has two outs (assuming a SB raise worth holding), an extra card at does not hurt you at all. If you're going to play winning NL with shortish stacks like this you have to be willing to stack off on this river. If you lost set over set, it happens, but stacking with a low set on a drawless board is not a really a leak.

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
Thanks for the comments guys. Looking back, my line definitely wasn't the best, but I really was worried about him having AAA. While I was thinking about folding the river, it was no more than a passing fancy -- I never really intended to do it.
He showed AK and I took down the pot. |

Re: Bottom Set in Raised Pot
How can you be worried about AAA? I think you played that hand horribly. If you're going to be worried about set over set in a cash game then you are losing money in the long run. Nevermind folding the river, you should have bet the river. Could have gotten more money from this hand.
