A3o steal gone awry

Not much of a read on BB
Had 20/7/1.5 for the 30 hands I'd played with him.

Party Poker 5/10 Hold'em (8 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
6 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

Turn: (4 BB) 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero folds.

Final Pot: 5 BB

I'm basically clueless on these type of situations [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

It's a tough ass spot, but calling on the flop with the intention of check-folding the turn is a bad plan. Usually you should just flat-out fold the flop here, and if you're going to continue you need to retake the aggressor's role.

If you're going to continue in the hand because your opponent could be on a draw or could be on complete garbage, you should calldown the whole way unless a Q or J hits.

He could be on a straight draw, but without a read, the pot isn't big enough to try and draw to your 3 aces.

Unless you have a read and are committed to calling down, I would fold to the raise preflop.

Do you not think that quite a lot of the time opponents are going to raise the flop with the intention of checking behind on the turn and that if they bet it's safe for you to fold but if they check then you probably have the best hand?

It's not a nice spot to be in, only giving a free card when you're ahead, but it's still better than folding to the flop raise incorrectly if you think there's a significant chance of you being ahead, which their might well be if the opponent just has overs or an over and backdoor draw or something?

Or do you think that most opponents are betting most worse hands again on the turn?

You raise a very good point, but basically, yes, I think most people are betting worse hands again on the turn, since it's apparent you don't have much.

Your point is a valid one to be considered, especially since a few people raise just about every flop in this situation. Calling the flop and folding the turn could be correct. I would like it a lot more if you had some card that could give you a reason to call the turn also, like a J or an 8 that can get some straight potential.
