Where do you draw the ethical line?
One of the replies in the post about a hand that was played out with two J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] in the deck asked what the player should do in such a situation. Obviously the ethical thing to do would be to bring it to the attention of the dealer so that he could call a misdeal but I wonder how I would act in such a situation.
For example in a NL game if I held A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] and I hit my set on the flop with the A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] I would most likely bet strong enough to get everyone to fold and would not announce the mistake to the dealer. I would rationalize it to myself by telling myself that I indeed had the best hand preflop and that what the other players don't know won't hurt them. Obviously this is not the most ethical play (if this were a home game I would stop the hand) and I would like to say that I am a good enough man that, even at the poker table, I would do 'the right thing' here. But I wouldn't. Would you? |

What if someone called you?

Re: Where do you draw the ethical line?
When I was younger, I would have cheated. I did it once. That's what it is, knowing the deck is fouled and not saying anything. Now, I would 'fess up. Maybe this belongs on the psychology forum.

What if someone called you? [/ QUOTE ] I would say I thought I had the A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]... Actually, I would probably say that I thought I had the A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] but when I saw it on the flop I just assumed that it was the A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] that I had. I find what Andyfox said about how he would have cheated when he was younger (and did in this scenario) but not now. I find that to be very interesting and probably would be true for me (I gotta mature eventually! Besides, when I am older I will have more money to my name than the money on the green felt in front of me) |

Re: Where do you draw the ethical line?
I think it's a combination of the money and maturity. While I gamble for much bigger stakes than what I used to, the money means less to me, both psychologically and financially. Maybe if it meant more financially, it would also mean more psychologically. It's hard to give an objective "what if" answer about oneself. I know I think I'd do the right thing even if the amount of money involved were lifechanging, but probably others who know me would have a better chance of knowing what I'd really do when push came to shove.

Re: Where do you draw the ethical line?
I'm surprised so many people said they would cheat here. Suppose that instead that you get a free play in the BB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] and the flop is A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. Would you try and bet everyone out of the pot because you know that even if you get called you can get your money back (b/c everyone will know the deck is fouled)?

Re: Where do you draw the ethical line?
im not sure how you came to the conclusion that the deck is stacked, but i highly doubt they would do anything about it if you told them it was during the middle of a hand. what are they going to do, shout misdeal and go on? of course not. they are going to say youre crazy and play out the hand. therefore id play the hand out normally and tell them afterwards. if you want, you can tell them there is 2Jd in the deck and that you want a misdeal, and after they say to play the hand out noone would have guessed you held such a monster.

Re: Where do you draw the ethical line?
huh? you totally lost me. In my example, I'm saying that there are 2 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]s, not that the deck is stacked. Its easy to prove the presence of the extra deuce.

Re: Where do you draw the ethical line?
i was replying to the 2Jd comment. i did not know how he acknowledged that there were 2Jd's in the deck. i read the Jd post afterwards, and under those circumstances i would report it. i thought that there were 2Jd's buried somewhere in the middle of the deck, and that the floor would have to pick up the deck and search to prove the duplicates.

Would you try and bet everyone out of the pot because you know that even if you get called you can get your money back [/ QUOTE ] In this case if you bet when you know the deck is fouled you DO NOT get your money back. The other players get their money back and they get to chop up what you put in the pot for this very reason. Randy Refeld |
