Playing B+M first time
Whats up guys,
The Atlantic City trip is official. Driving down Saturday morning and staying till sometime Sunday. Ive never played at a B+M so tell me everything. I want to play 2/4 or 3/6 because my bankroll can't take much higher limits. What is the speed of play like? How much and when to tip the dealer? Table manners? How to not look like a chump? Much appreciated Greg |

Re: Playing B+M first time
One piece of advice. Don't act like your namesake.
When you aren't famous and on TV people will kick your ass for being a jerk. Other than that, have fun. It's not nearly as scary playing at a B&M as people who have never done it think. I'll be playing at the Borgata and the Trop myself this weekend. |

What is the speed of play like? [/ QUOTE ] Slow - it really depends on the speed of the dealer and the people you're playing with. 30 hands per hour at 2/4 or 3/6 where there are going to be some first time players is fantastic. [ QUOTE ] How much and when to tip the dealer? [/ QUOTE ] $1 per pot, tip after you are pushed the pot (dont necessarily have to tip if you just win the blinds, but it's up to you) [ QUOTE ] Table manners? [/ QUOTE ] Dont be a dick if someone cracks your good hands. DO have fun, talk to people sitting next to you, act in a pleasant manner, etc. (believe me, the amount of people acting like jackasses is up there - you dont want to be lumped in with them, do you?) Dont take forever to make decisions, its not the WPT. Dont be afraid to ask questions or tell people its your first time playing live - its not your first time playing poker, so its not that big of a deal. Oh yea, and HAVE FUN (cant say this enough) [ QUOTE ] How to not look like a chump? [/ QUOTE ] That all depends on how big of a chump you are to begin with. Dont wear sunglasses, dont put your hood up over your head while playing if you have one, dont jump out of your chair and scream DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA if you win a huge pot, and just dont give people an excuse to say 'i cant stand these idiots who watch poker on tv and then come act like a jackass in the poker room' - so basically, if you already do act like a moron, try and tone it down, otherwise you'll be just fine Good luck! |

Re: Playing B+M first time
Yup. FWIW, I find that 'dont act like a jerk' is pretty good universal advice. I don't understand why so many people don't live by it when in the poker room, and in general.

Re: Playing B+M first time
Although the game will be much slower than online, don't take forever to make a decision. You should be able to make a pre-flop fold/raise/call decision within 2 seconds of looking at your cards. At the low limits, most of the decisions will be fairly obvious, and the ones that aren't you won't be making huge mistakes either way, so there's no need to really call for time and take over 10 seconds in deciding. (Whenever I call "time," I usually make my action within 5 seconds). Have fun.

And don't complain when the fish are fish.
I mean, if someone wants to do the "WPT staredown" with his sunglasses and cap, give him all the time he wants before you take his money. |

Re: Playing B+M first time
I'd like to tack a related question onto this thread. I've never been to a casino, but figure to go in a few months or so. (There are low or no-cost buses that leave from my neighborhood to Foxwoods and AC everyday, morning and night.
1. Do the casinos give you free beverages or any other freebies while your playing? 2. What do most people wear? i.e. Dress code? 3. What is the lowest stake Hold'em limit game available? 4. Is there usually a choice of tables? 5. Is it possible to watch the tables for a while to try to find the loosest one? 6. How long does it usually take to get on a table? 7. Is switching tables frowned upon or considered bad form? -TomBk |
