1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.
2. Click Run... on this menu. 3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen. 4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es). 5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address. 6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).

That's not going to give you a new IP if you are on broadband.
It's just going to stick you with the same one. The ISP has an IP specifically assigned to individual accounts. Nice effort though.

[/ QUOTE ] interesting. my roommate and i have different ip addresses, but we have the same isp (cable modem). therefore, the router is doing something to change the ip address. there IS something you can do to change it after the signal gets here, or we would not have different ip adresses. so, does anybody know what this is?

It doesn't matter.
If you are using a router, it assigns each of your computers a unique IP. But, basically, that IP is only used to communicate with the router itself. The rest of the internet sees the same static IP that was there before the router. Your ISP's assigned IP is simply used by the router and not your own computer.

yes and thats the way comncast cable works. Since the dynamic address is actaully reserved by the ISP for about 15 days for the MAC address of the cable modem, even powering off the modem and back on will not get a new address. The only way to get a new public IP address is to have another cable modem and when you unplug one and plug in the other, which has a different MAC address, the second modem will get a new dynamic IP address. Hopefully this information will not be used for devient purposes. The address on the PC itself is usually a private dhcp address that pc obtained from the modem and thats why on some sites you see something like "logged in from ip address 192.168.1.20/65.54.23.5 the 192.168.1.20 is the private address and the 65.54.23.5 is the address assigned by the ISP. couldn't resist responding to this as it is burned into my brain.
