Default POLL: flop decisions (2 hands)

These are interesting hands which helped me in the past.

Hand 1:
I just sat down and I've never played with any of these players.

I post in the CO and look down at J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Three limpers to me and I check. button folds, SB completes, BB checks.

Six players to the flop of 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

SB bets, BB calls, two other players call.

What's my play? raise, call, or fold?

--------------------------------

Hand 2:
First orbit, no reads.

Preflop: Hero is UTG+2 with 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls, 5 folds, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets, SB raises, BB calls, UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, Hero ????

3-bet, call, or fold?

--------------------------------

I said call and call. In both cases you have weak made hands and no way to further protect them. (In the second, SB did a great job trying to do it for you.) Both boards are drawy and the draws aren't going away on this street. I don't fold the first because even if behind, you have odds to chase trips/2-pair, I don't raise because it won't get anyone out and I'm not convinced my hand is best. I don't fold the 2nd because I have a friggin overpair. I don't 3-bet because I'm not convinced that SB hasn't hit a strong hand (22,33,random 2-pair) and want to see his action on the turn.

In the first hand, there is no card that is a "blank." All put straight possibilies or pair the board, or are an overcard. Only "safe cards" are non-diamond 7 and J. Pretty close to the same thing on the second, actually.

In Hand 1 I want to raise but I reluctantly said call and raise a turn blank. I just don't think we are going to like very many turn cards but wind up folding the best hand too frequently.

In hand 2 I think its an easy flop 3 bet. There aren't going to be many favorable turn cards and then we have no initiative for the rest of the hand with what could easily be the best hand. This is a bad spot to wait until the turn to pop it again IMO

Call both. The turn card will drastically change your pot equity up or down, so calling is preferable to raising. No way am I folding the top pair/overpair for one bet given the size of these pots.

I 3-bet the second because you have an equity advantage now versus 3 players. You'll win this pot more than 40% of the time. Get the money in the pot now. The time for calling is later in the hand IMO.

Interesting. I said fold hand 1 and call hand two, and not that I am in the distinct minority on Hand 1. My reasoning for the fold in Hand 1 is that the hand strikes me as one of those "reverse implied odds" -- the hand is so weak against 5 players and so unlikely to significantly improve, that I'm ditching here instead of paying to see the turn.

And I'm frankly not thrilled about the call in hand 2 after being C/R'd and having four go to the turn, but I can't pitch my overpair with a backdoor flush draw.

I said raise hand 1 and call hand 2.

I raise hand 1 because if I get reraised the callers might fold and I'll have a much better idea what to do on the turn. If SB calls I get a chance for a free river card if I want it.

Hand 2 I call intending to bet the turn if a blank hits or if there's no action. Nobody's folding here and many cards ruin my hand on the turn. I act last so I get a very good idea of where I stand when it's my turn to act on the turn.
