Default 10 Week Challenge : Week 8

Hey guys,

This one's gonna be short as I barely logged any hours whatsoever this week. It wasn't so much out of being lazy this time as it was out being busy, so that gives me some semblence of an excuse I guess. I'm sure I'll still get crap from the people who keep me in line, but hey, I deserve it. I had fun this week instead of working like I should've been, so I just have to take it.

Days 1-4 :

Days 1 thru 3 I don't remember a thing about my sessions, but my spreadsheet says I logged a whopping 3.75 hours and was down $2,769, so that was a nice start. Fortunately, I got a call Tuesday night from 2+2'er JustinA and a Commerce meeting was set up for the following day. A great idea for me since: 1) we'd never met before so it'd be nice to get together for some poker and food and good times, and 2) it would be a welcome respite from the online grind that is Paddy Poka. So Wednesday afternoon he drives over to my condo and we head out to grab some lunch before our impending kick-ass session. This was maybe my third time at the Elephant Bar and my food has been above average every time. It's sort of like a Red Robin type place, except for Pan-Asian food and a more sophisticated ambiance, but it's a loud place 'cause of the open kitchen. Way, way inexpensive for a place like that though. I'm surprised by the bill every time it seems. Oh yeah, The Dude tagged along too 'cause I forgot to tell him about it till like five minutes before Justin showed up and he was like, WTF? Anyway, one pulled barbequed pork, an order of mashed potatoes, and no alcoholic beverages later (less than two more months) and we're off to the happiest place on earth.

I was planning on sitting with Justin at the 9/18 tables and showing those brown chip players how it's done, but seeing as how I had logged under 4 hours of work halfway through the week and since The Dude was coming and would play with Justin, I decided to put in some work hours and play 40/80. I actually had a pretty interesting session as far as hands goes. Usually most sessions go by pretty SOP with no real tough decision making involved, but there ended up being two in particular that required thinking for me. The first came up about three hours into my session:

Three players fold to a MP player who's very loose with raising in this spot. He likes opening with all sorts of hands, so it's not a big surprise that he found something playable this time and puts out a raise. It's folded to me two off the Button with T [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]T [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] and I 3-bet. Two tight'ish players behind me and the SB fold to a really loose fishy thinking BB who calls. MP also calls and we're 3 to the flop for 9.5 SB's.

Flop comes: 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Checked to me, I bet, both call. 3 to the turn for 6.25 BB's.

Turn comes: 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

BB checks, MP bets. This bet could mean all sorts of things. It could mean he has a pair and doesn't want to see it get checked through. It could mean he picked up a flush draw. It could mean he just spiked his set. Any of those are plausible here. So yeah, I raise and the BB calls two cold without too much contemplation. Without any contemplation actually. The thought of folding just didn't enter his mind. Now MP 3-bets, which narrows his hand down further. He could do this with a full house here. He could do this with a gutshot and flush draw here. He could do this with a straight here. Or he could do this with an overpair here. He would not play a hand like 66 or 77 like this. I call, BB calls, and we're 3 to the river for 17.25 BB's.

River comes: T [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

BB checks, MP bets, I contemplate for a quick second or two while staring at the BB out of my peripheral. He's not giving up a thing, but doesn't seem to have that "I missed and no longer care about this hand" aura, so I call. He might fold, he might overcall, and he might raise. But I think he'll raise here more than twice as often as he'll fold. This time he happened to raise, MP called, I 3-bet and both called. My hand is obviously good.

Hand 2:

This one was a little more interesting in that it was a bit less ABC than the first. About an hour later I'm still in the same seat and open UTG with J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. Player on my immediate left 3-bets. He's pretty tight and respects my tightness, so he's not raising here with hands like KQ. Next to act loose fishy calls 3 cold. A tight aggressive but not solid player in the 9 seat calls time and thinks for a bit before cold-calling as well. He'd cap here with AA and KK for sure and I'd think QQ as well. I think he'd fold AK, but I'm not certain. JJ-99 all seem reasonable for him as well. It's folded around the uberfish in the BB who calls and I call. 5 to the flop for 15.5 SB's.

Flop comes: K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

It's checked around to seat 9 who bets a little out of rhythm. BB calls, I call, UTG+1 calls, EMP mucks. 4 to the turn for 9.75 BB's.

Turn comes: 4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Checked around to seat 9 who looks like he wants to bet and is still undecided when he makes this comment directed at the uberfish BB: "The only person I'm worried about now is you having a 4." It feels like he's still slightly undecided as he's saying this, but makes up his mind by the end of his sentence and bets. BB mucks and it's on me. I wasn't convinced of AK after his flop bet or when it was on him on the turn, but after this comment I'm almost certain he does not have AK. Peripheral on my left gives me nothing on the PF 3-bettor, but he would not have check-called AA, KK, or AK with that big of field on the flop. I don't think either of them would buy a raise here from he for a K, and there's really no reason why they should. They're both semi-capable hand-readers and a resteal/free SD is a possibility. I end up calling after some deliberation and EP calls. 3 of us to the river for 12.75 BB's.

River comes: A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Sweet. I bet, both quickly fold.

Some time around 9 o'clock, The Dude wants to leave 'cause he's down 3 racks in the 9/18 game so we decide to head back to our condo for the night. I cash out up $4,320 on the session and I'm back in black for the week! Cue the ACDC, head out to valet, and head home for some drunken foosball, movie watching, and 2-7 triple draw.

The next day I wake up pretty late and Justin and The Dude are already like up and functional. Don't ask me how they do that before noon, but somehow they do. By the time I'm dressed they're ready to head by to the Commerce and so off we go to kick some ass. There's immediate seating at a must move 40 game so I go to take it, but not before one of the floormen, Damian, catches my eye and waves me over. Now he's carded me before and once made me get up from my 40 game and leave because I couldn't provide identification, so I have a feeling I know what's coming.

"Hey man, do you have your ID on you?"

"Uh, no, actually I only brought my money clip and a $5k bundle."

"We've talked about this before you know. You need to have ID to be able to play here. Security asked me to card you and I can't let you play without it."

"Ya know, I totally understand, it's just my license is in my wallet and I never really think to bring my wallet when I come to play cards 'cause I keep all my money in my clip or in bundles."

"Well, we've talked about this before. You have to have your ID to play."

I hold out a gold $10 chip. "I totally understand. It's my bad."

He takes the chip. "Okay, I'll let it slide this last time. But you really need to remember it from now on. You need some chips?"

I count out 20 bills and head to my seat. My session goes by pretty uneventually with no tough situations or thought-requiring plays and the table was barely good by Commerce 40/80 standards, but I found myself in good situations more than my fair share of times and so ended up $3,120 before it was time to go. Drew wanted to go home and Justin was headed back to SD that night so I had no choice but to vacate the premises. While I was waiting for Archie to rack up and cash out my chips, Damian came up to me and again reminded me that I'd have to remember to bring my ID next time. I'm not sure if that means that he really means it this time or he just wants to get tipped again. It'd suck if it was the former since the WPT is coming to town for the next month and the games will be just AWESOME. Regardless, I plan on making a trip and trying to tip my way into a game again or maybe just avoiding his shift. We'll see.

Between Friday and Saturday, I logged only 3.05 hours of online poker for a total loss of $801. I had very seriously planned on putting in 12 to 15 hours those two days, but my old best friend called up and wanted to hang out. It'd been waaaay too long since we'd talked or hung out, so it really wasn't much of a contest as to what I should do. We went out to lunch, had some beers, threw some caps, caught up on life, and had a really great time Friday night. Saturday we went out shopping to pick up some things and went back to his place and just chilled for most of the day before coming back to my place and having some more beers. I might go golfing with him in the morning, but probably not since I'm guessing I'll be dead tired and want to crash in the next hour or so.

So I logged the least hours of any week so far and netted the least. Sweet. $3,870.50 over 18.8 hours. Not pretty. Hopefully I'll make up for it next week, but we'll see...

PS. So much for short. My bad.

Good post again. Sounds like you have a pretty good life

One question, what does 'throw some caps' mean?

WTF? These guys will bend over for 10 bucks?

Reminds me of the first time I went to Atlantic City. I was only 16 (it was 18 to get in at the time). We were hopping from casino to casino and it was usally cool. I was the only one under age and we would walk right in most of the time. Occasionally I'd get stopped, say I didn't have my ID with me and would have to go around to another entrance.

So this one time a woman security guard stops us. She was fairly young, not hot but not ugly. Asks for my ID, I say I don't have it. She asks what year I was born. I was kinda flustered and said 1960. (that would make me 22 at the time, lol). So she kinda gives me a "yeah right" face, then my friend says to he "oh come on, you're a cutie, you can let him in". She just gushes and says "oh, all right". It was funny because this guy always acted like god's gift to women. And they seemed to believe it.

Hey GoT what are you going to do when you turn 21 and show him your ID that says you just turned 21???

You think he'll laugh or throw you out for being such a dick to him this whole time once he figures it out.

TT hand- With BB as fishy as he is don't you think it's almost as likely he'll call 2 as 1? and isn't there a good chance he'll check-3bet a flush. It turned out well, but if he calls I'd feel like I probably missed a bet(or 2).

Wrong night. The dude was up three racks the first night. A portion of that money was mine...

We're sitting in the 9/18 game, the Dude is in the 1 seat and I'm in the 4 seat. I get T2o UTG and I raise. There's like two cold callers to the Dude on the button, and he 3bets with KJo. One of the blinds caps it and all call.

Flop is KT4 or so, everyone checks to the Dude who bets. blind calls, I raise, all fold to the Dude who 3bets. Blind and I both call.

Turn is a T. Checked to me, I bet, the Dude raises again, Blind calls two cold, I chicken out and just call, and we're 3 to the river for 22 big bets.

River is a K. I check and call the Dude's bet, and he takes down the monster pot. I suck.

I think he definitely knows GoT is under 21, and there will be no hard feelings or awkwardness when GoT is 21 and shows his real ID.

I'm saying this having never met GoT, and never having been to the Commerce.
