Default Incredibly Tough Player

I play in a regular no limit Holdem game at a local casino. I do pretty well in the game. There are a lot of regular players in this game...typically 4 or 5 of us are in the game every Wednesday.

There is one player that I struggle with every single time I get heads up with him. He is a very tough, aggressive, and tricky player. It seems that 90% of the time that we get heads up, he beats me out of the pot. I cannot get any type of read on him. It seems that everytime I bet, he comes over the top of me. When I do call and we showdown, it seems that he always has the best of it. When I do not call, he will turn over a bluff with complete rags. I've tried to change it up on him, but everything I do seems to fail. As mentioned, I do well in the game and the other players make many mistakes that I capitalize on and I rarely lose money. But, what should I do about this player? Should I simply avoid playing against him as much as possible? Or should I just play super tight against him? Has anyone ever had similar experiences such a this? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks.

poison him. Bring some exlax laced brownies to the cardroom next weak and make sure he gets one.

Yes, nothing but tight, aggressive, and be willing to show down if you think your hand is good.

Beyond that, become a better player than he is.

He probably has excellent reading skills and is not even playing his hand half the time. Hes watching you. Minimize your tells and movements when your with him. If you have position dont look at your cards until hes acted. I got the same problem at Harrahs with BBQ John. My action is to usually find a different table. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will probably be playing with him tonight. I will work on eliminating tells and simply play tight/aggressive. If it doesn't work, I'll take your second piece of advise...I won't play against him.

Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with check/calling when you have showdown value.

In no limit, I think this approach would be disasterous. A good player will easily adjust to this approach and still extract more value out of you than you ever get out of him.

BBQ John is a tough player. I played with him last night for the first time. The one time I had a hand to play back at him, two overcards hit the board and he had position on me. I tried to wait and find a better spot but the opportunity never presented itself.

In a no limit game, yes. Until you get some sort of read on him, he's always gonna have the best of it when he's in a pot with you.
