Default clay chip surface wear

I recently got some slightly used paulson's, from a retired cruise ship off of ebay. I absolutely love 'em
however, when sliding my fingernail across the surface, they give a textured, "cross-hatched" feeling that makes kind of a 'zip' sound.

this is more pronounced than on the few older paulsons I have from fitzgeralds, and the horseshoe, which have received much more play-time than the ebay ones.
nevertheless, these older paulsons have a faint 'zip' texture when you slide you nail across them.

I am getting close to the question -

my horse-head mold chip samples, from homepokerchips.com, have an even more pronounced zip texture than the ebay chips.

my natural conclusion is that,
new=pronounced texture
mildly used=less texture
heavily used=nearly no texture (a mature paulson)

1) does this jive with the experience of anyone else who bought a set of horseheads from homepokerchips.com?

2) any idea how long, and at what kind of usage rate, before these start to smooth out somewhat?

3) did the custon set have the same texture I have described from the sample chips they sent me?

thanks
doc
