Typical small stakes game. 4-6 limpers to Hero on the button with 22 - 77. Hero raises. Does this move make sense? Is it +EV?
I have some opinions about it, but I want to here eveyone elses opinion. Please comment. PBob |

I've always wondered about that actually. I makes sense to raise if everyone just called your raise. If the SB or BB 3-bets you lose ev.

What happens if an Ace or King flops with your set card?
Now you are going to kill a lot of the action, right? Might help if you get an Ace King flop with no set card---assuming a bluff would work. |

Never thought much about it. Off the top of my head...
Positives: -You might get a free turn, giving you four chances to hit your set instead of three. -You gain increased fold equity on the flop and turn. -If you do flop your set, you are probably going to get a lot more action than you normally would, especially if the board is all rags. -The larger pot size encourages more draws to stay in when you hit your set. -Showing down a winner after raising with 22 can only increase your action later. Negatives: -You're burning one more SB than necessary to shoot for a set against a lot of opponents. In most SS games, you can get to the turn anyway for 1 more SB. -The larger pot size decreases your increased fold equity. That made sense to me. -Your typical SS player doesn't know that he's not supposed to bet into a PFR when the flop pairs his 9 kicker, lessening the chances of a free card. -Not raising allows you to represent the scariest hand that anyone can imagine if the flop is checked to you. Nobody's going to give a PFR credit for the straight on a 256 flop, but they might believe a button limper enough to fold the turn. -If you do hit your set on an A or K high flop, you're probably going to get less action than if you'd limped. I'm sure I'll think more about it later, but at least on first impression I think the negatives outweigh the positives. |

Some people like this move, I hate it because I think it kills your implied odds.

I love this play. If you think it's wrong, you might as well fold preflop.

Won't this play increase the likelihood of people checking to you on the button? Wouldn't you like to slip in, flop a set, then be able to protect it against backdoor draws, gutshots, etc by raising a bet in front of you?

Raising with a small PP? I thought size didn't matter? At least that's what the ladies like us to think.
