Default 99 played fish style...

...or maybe I am just a fish.

-> MP plays in a 2+2 sort of way
-> Button is decent overall, but cold calls fairly often pre-flop
-> SB is also decent, with a tendency to make a play for the pot on the flop or turn but then go passive on the river.

(And yes, this was much more like a tough 10/20 than a juicy 5/10 but I decided it was a good chance to work on skills rather than make money.)

Party Poker 5/10 Hold'em (6 max, 6 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is CO with 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
UTG folds, MP raises, Hero calls, Button folds, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: (8 SB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP checks, Hero bets, SB raises, BB folds, MP folds, Hero calls.

Turn: (6 BB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)

River: (8 BB) A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)

Final Pot: 10 BB

OK, maybe I should've 3-bet pre-flop, though I really don't think it's that terrible (IMO, only folding would be terrible).

Anyway, the main reason I did it was because the button was cold-calling fairly often and I wanted to give him the chance here. Thinking ahead to the flop, I figured there are a lot of flops like, say, J83r where it will check to MP, he'll bet, and I can raise.

Also, I win a much bigger pot this way when I flop a set. Not a huge consideration, but not negligible.

Of course this is a much higher variance way to play the hand compared to 3-betting it pre-flop, but I'm not sure it's that terrible. Anyway, that's what I was thinking at the time.

I guess the rest of it is standard based on my read of SB, but wasn't sure.

If the raiser is decent than you expect two big cards or a pair more often than not right? Why would you ever want to invite a cold call that would possibly add one or two overcards to the equation? Even if the scenario ends up pretty good like MP2 has AJ and bonehead cold calls Kx that doesn't really make me happy.

OK, so I had some morbid curiosity about exactly how much you all would hate the cold call pre-flop. I guess it came out like expected.

FWIW, I don't cold-call much. One of the only times I do it is when there is someone loose and bad yet to act such that I figure I'd like to have 'em along for the ride.

In this case, the button was not really that loose pre-flop or that bad post-flop, so I probably should've just 3-bet it.

[/ QUOTE ]IMO this is some of the worst logic i have ever read on this forum... holdem is about position... when you are in the CO, you want the button to foldfoldfold.

IMO calling is worse than folding ESPECIALLY if the button cold calls alot. With 99 you dont want more people in the hand, especially people that have posistion on you. If you arent going to 3 bet this hand, you are better off folding it

I am a no limit player and very infrequent poster in these parts... But this statement that a fold is better than a call has to be wrong.

As for the hand, unless the person who raised the flop is a maniac, why call down? On the flop its multi-way and no draws.
