Default Moving to Washington DC

So it looks as if I'll be moving to DC next month for my first "real" job since graduating last June. I'm trying to get a wide array of opinions on a couple of questions so I turn to my fellow gambling degenerates as well.

Should I live in DC proper or a VA/MD suburb? I'll only be needing a studio/1br and cost isn't that much of an issue (as long as I can get in for under 1k/month). I won't have a car so proximity to a metro station is key if I go suburban.

Are the any cities/areas to avoid? You always hear stories about crime and poverty in DC, what areas are these?

Alexandria is a great place to live, but they don't have much in the way of metro stops. I'd look in Arlington if I were you, specifically in Roslyn. There are a lot of good places around there within walking distance of the subway.

Arlington is probably a good call - There's some cool stuff downtown as well - Dupont Circle is cool - I like the area by chinatown a lot, but it's getting pricey - Whatever you do, don't live outside the beltway.

Hey, I live outside the beltway by about 2 minutes. We have just as much fun and I'm a 5 minute walk from the Franconia/Springfield Metro! Don't put us down I would still recommend Arlington as your best choice though.

Sorry - I actually lived outside the Beltway too - That's why I was so adamant - I didn't like it too much...so I moved to LA.
