This is a perfect reason why the 10x rule exists.
If you have less than 10x the BB, your only preflop move should be all in or fold (except for certain bubble situations). You put a third of your stack in preflop (as did your opponent) so this virtually committed you to the hand. If you fold, you only have 6xBB. Since he checked, I would probably push, but you can't feel happy about it, since it's likely he will call you even with just a jack. Hopefully he'll either call you with an underpair, or fold TT. ick. |

No real strong read. Fairly loose.

Soss:
10x rule sounds very reasonable. My only concern in this particular instance is pushing with 6 more players to act behind me. It would seem I will only be called when beat. However, as you said I guess I really have very little room to work with such a small stack. |

My usual play in this spot is to raise to 500 preflop, then bet out 500 on the flop if he checks, leaving you 1000 or so behind so that you can fold. By making it 650, you not only increase your investment, but also make the pot so large that your flop bet has to be larger than is comfortable for you to steal the pot.
With that said, once you get to this point, you're really in a tough spot. I would probably bet out 350 or so with those being the last chips you put in the pot. It's going to feel weak, but if you jam the flop here, you might as well be stone cold bluffing. Note that by betting 650-350, your investment is the same if you go 500-500, but the difference between 500 and 650 preflop is minimal, while the difference between 350 and 500 after the flop is quite large (relative to pot size and force of bet). |

then fold it.
a fold is better than a 3x raise here, IMO. the problem with having a small stack in a tournament is that sometimes you have to choose between two -EV choices (trying to figure out what the one with the least -EV is) |

[/ QUOTE ] this might be true, but it doesn't make a push wrong. there's a very good chance you'll pick up the blinds. also, don't discount the fact that somebody might do something dumb and call you with 77 or A9. |
