Default How did I play on this hand?

this is the 2nd hand dealt in a $6.50 turbo sng at PokerStars, so i didn't have any reads on players yet.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t20 (9 handed) converter

CO (t1460)
Button (t1490)
SB (t1460)
BB (t1500)
UTG (t1440)
UTG+1 (t1440)
MP1 (t1750)
Hero (t1500)
MP3 (t1460)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
UTG calls t20, UTG+1 calls t20, MP1 calls t20, Hero calls t20, MP3 calls t20, CO calls t20, Button folds, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (t160) K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (8 players)
SB checks, BB bets t20, UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, MP1 folds, Hero raises to t140, MP3 folds, CO folds, SB folds, BB calls t120.

Turn: (t440) T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets t100, BB calls t100.

River: (t640) 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets t360, BB folds.

Final Pot: t1000

i was really happy to hit my set with another high card out there and EIGHT people seeing the flop. i tried to maximize the amount of $ i could extract from the table, but since practically everyone folded to a measly $20 bet i wasn't too hopeful. i tried to keep my bets solid (damn flush draws) but not too high so as to prevent him from calling. in retrospect, i think my river bet was about $150 too high...i was really hoping he'd call me with toppair.

all in all, how did i play this hand?

I actually think you played the hand a litlte to soft. I would have bet 3/4ths pot on the turn. That gives a flush draw the wrong odds to call and puts pressure on TPTK. On the river i suspect you bet into a busted flush draw so he wouldn't have called t20 much less whatever greater amount you bet.

You definitely should bet more on the turn. A 100 bet into a pot of 440 is giving him the correct odds to draw for a flush. I never played on pokestar but I am guessing the players are quite fishy in the lower level buyins. I would bet 250 - 300 on the turn at least.

your river bet is fine the way the pot stands, I think if he had top pair, he would've called. The weak flop bet (20) most likely means the lack of a top pair though.

Your turn bet is too small, assuming my math is correct (I did it in my head quickly), but you're giving him correct odds to draw to a flush with the bet of 100. Something more along the lines of 250 will not give him correct odds in this situation.

Your river bet probably could have been smaller. The check-calls indicate he is drawing to something or has a not-so-great hand. The only other hand your are worried about up to this point is KK or TT. Both are unlikely considering the pot was not raised pre-flop. I'd bet less on the river, trying to induce a call from a small pocket pair or weak king.

i actually wanted him to call me on the turn. i planned to bet small on the turn if the new card wasn't a heart and didn't add to the straight draw on the board. i guess in retrospect i should have bet more on the turn (t200 to t250-ish) and been softer on the river if it got there. thanks for the help.

Why would you want to give someone correct odds to make a hand that beats yours?

Another important thing is that if he has a big-hand like top pair, 2 pair, etc. he will call a bigger bet on the turn anyway. All you do with a larger turn bet is eliminate draws, which is precisely what you should want to do.
