Default Is this flop right for a checkraise?

Table was pretty passive indeed, very little raising preflop or otherwise and I'm trying to do more checkraising on the flop these days (when warranted) - was this a good spot to do it?

I don't like this at all. Granted, the check-raise looks brilliant once we can all see that button bet it for you, but when you initially checked, you had no idea where the bet was coming from.

What was your plan if BB led off?

Nice hand. Did you have a read that BB would bet the flop or did you just take a chance? This is one of those hands where taking a chance that you can get a check-raise in is still the best play and if the action doesn't go your way just call and cross your fingers for a nice turn card.

True I didn't know BB would bet, I was simply hoping either CO or he would so I could raise and try and knock out the first pair.

If either of the first two had bet and there was no raise I would have called and hoped for a helpful turn card.

I'm leading off the flop. With only 5 sbs in the pot, my bet protects my hand against lower pairs, gutshots, etc.

On this kind of flop, I would not be at all surprised to see this get checked around, and the last thing I want to do is give everybody a free card.

IMO this is check-raising just for the sake of check-raising. If the pot were larger or you knew where the bet was coming from I can see making this play, but not under these circumstances.

Overcards will regularly bet this sort of flop and they were the sorts of hands I wanted to get out as a pair of 9s often wont hold up with overcards on board and four opponents.
