Default Playing bottom set

Villian is a player I know very well. Online 3-6 blinds.

Hero $755, Villian covers.

Villian UTG raises $24. Fold to my button where I call $30 with 55.

Flop Q 10 5 rainbow.
Villian checks.
I check.

Turn A.
Villian bets $24.
I call.

River 3. Final board A Q 10 5 3.
Villain bets $48.

Thoughts?

Okay, a few questions, though I rarely play this high:

1: You say you know Villain very well. What are his raising standards UTG? Would he raise AK or AQ from there? What about TT?

2: You say you know Villain well, but do you think he thinks he knows you well? What would he put you on, calling pre-flop on the button? A small pocket pair, or would you make this call with more marginal holdings like AQ or AJ? Would you call with TT, or re-raise? Would you re-raise with QQ? What about AK?

I agree with the previous posters; the only reason you wouldn't raise now is because you are afraid of set over set, and if you don't put Villain on AK or AQ, he's probably on a total bluff or higher set, so your raise only gets money in the pot when you are behind.

i would bet the flop as well. Also, you need to get money in someway somehow before the river.

On the river, the way you played it, I would raise to 150, and fold if re-raised.

Perhaps I was too tired, and should have included this. Let's say 99 - AA. AK and AQs. I believe he would have bet JJ KK AA and AQs 95% of the time on the flop, and AK 35% of the time. If he raised with something unusual (for him) like KJs or AT and hit that flop he certainly would have bet.

I would have led on the flop if he had position, for sure. He checked to me, and I figured I was way ahead, or way behind. Do I make a mistake not raising here? At the time I thought his betting was screaming, "please call or raise".

I believe he does in fact know me pretty well. I would call this on the button with any pair, and suited low cards. I would also call with AK, and AQ sometimes. Whether I reraise any hand depends on who is to act behind me when a quality player has raised UTG. In this case there is no hand I would have reraised, but he may not think that.

bet 1/2 pot on the flop. first of all, you need to get money in the pot, second, with a small flop bet after the PFR checks to you, it looks like a weak-ass attempt at stealing the pot...he'll have to call w/ any reasonable hand.

If this is how you play your sets, this has to be a big leak in your play against this player. You're just not making enough money here with your set.

You've called $30 preflop, and you stand to make ~$250 or so at most, ~$100 if you paranoid-ly just call the river. If those are the types of pots you win with a set, then you shouldn't be playing pairs for their set value against this opponent. You need to be making ~$300+ when you hit, or be confident in your ability to outplay him and win pots when you miss.
