Trips w/ Tricky Turn
Party $100 NL - $1/2 blinds
Hero has posted dead blind UTG. First hand of the night, no read on anyone. Hero has $100 Villain has $114 PF: Hero checks w J8o, EP2,EP3(Villain),button,SB,BB all limp. Pot $12 Flop: JJA (2 of same suit). All check to Villain, who bets $7, folded to Hero who raises to $25, Villain calls. Pot $62 Turn: A What should Hero do, and why? Your thoughts are appreciated. ------------------ My reasoning and actual play follow: Villain bet represents either an A or a J (semibluff flush-draw unlikely with this many players still in pot). Hero's raise represents a J, Villain's call also represents a J. With an 8 kicker, Hero is likely outkicked by Villain--until the A comes on the turn. Now, most likely the 2 hands will tie with FH Jacks over Aces. Hero came out betting $60 on the turn, Villain laid down cursing in the chat line about how lucky I was to hit my 2-outer, and shows KJ. Hero wins the pot. Q: Were the odds of winning the pot outright by betting worth the risk of having the villain show an Ace-high FH? |

Re: Trips w/ Tricky Turn
On the turn you are most likely splitting and have a pretty reasonable chance of stealing the other half of the pot. Seems ok. The mistake though was on the flop; trips with no kicker is not a hand you normally want to play a big pot with. Even Partypoker morons generally won't pay off their whole stack there if they can't beat your J8. And your other mistake of course was posting a blind from UTG, but I suppose that's not relevent to the discussion.

Re: Trips w/ Tricky Turn
That's a pretty horrible turn. After that turn, I'm done with the hand. Betting doesn't accurately represent an ace because of your flop check-raise, and I would consider it very likely that your opponent has an ace. Although it sucks, just check-fold this one.
Also: You posted a blind UTG? Are you CRAZY? |
