2nd Pair to the river?

OK, I don't ever do it. Should I bet/call my second pair to the river, and when. I realized I never do it. If I flop second pair, I'll bet, fold to a re-raise or call it then ditch it by the river if unimproved. Is it just a read thing? Any advice, thanks.
