PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t2000, ante 100 (9 handed) converter
MP3 (t7440) Hero (t7050) Button (t40957) SB (t24478) BB (t16367) UTG (t38320) UTG+1 (t25810) MP1 (t32907) MP2 (t29166) Preflop: Hero is CO with 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. 5 folds, Hero raises to t6950 I had only been at this table for 5 orbits and had been shortish most of that time. I have been playing pretty tight, as most pots have been open raised by aggresive big stacks on my right. Most of the raises had been taking it down preflop. PS $10 tourney. We are inside the money, with about 8 tables left. Very unusually, all folded to me in the cutoff here. There is 3900 in the pot, which is more than half my stack. BB must call 4950 to win 10750 so this gives me some folding equity. And if I get called, I can always win. |

Has to be done, especially if you've been quiet for a while. Found myself in almost exactly the same position with 72o last night, SB big stack called with JTs. Rivered a 7. Had the added advantage of putting SB on serious tilt so that he came gunning for me when I had KK two orbits later

Yes, pretty standard.

If the button is fairly tight its a good play since the BB is also a short stack who would have to risk a big chunk to call. If you do get called hopefully your 2 cards are live and you get lucky.

Since this is a form of gambling this is ALWAYS TRUE with any hand before the flop. Actually given the stack sizes of the blinds I think you made the correct move, but to say this is an auto push is a little bit of a reach. The funny thing is I like this push better than pushing K4 or something...you probably have 2 live cards here. |

I don't like it. Even if the players to your left are very tight, there is a good chance the BB will call. This is such a bad hand. With an average hand, this play is OK. Having one high card, two middle cards, connected or single gap, or suited cards would increase your win rate a lot.

I watched you play over the weekend, and you're better than me, but boy, I dunno about this one.
You're short-stacked, and this screams steal, so I have to think you're going to get called by a pretty wide range of hands. If I'm going to try this, I'd like to have at least the possibility of a str8, flush or decent pair. That said, you're stealing from the right people, and once the blinds get to the bigger stacks you can forget your folding equity. Tough call, but because your customers are short-stacked but not desperate, I'll give it a thumbs up. |

BB will have to call off 1/3 of his stack. I am hoping that this will put him in a tricky situation with a marginal hand.
