Buy Lee Jones's Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em. you will get a list of starting hands that should keep you from losing your bankroll.

I wouldn't be playing at party poker just yet if I were you. You're just not ready for that game yet (.5/1 party).
Open an account at pokerstars with $30- $50 and play the .05/.1 game for a few thousand hands while you read a few good books on poker and familiarize yourself with this forum some more. The Lee Jones book is a good start. Eventually you will learn that you need around $150 to play pokerstars .25/.50 game successfully. This is a great training ground and where many of us cut our teeth. I probably played close to 25,000 hands there. If you can learn the basics you should never lose your deposit. I started with $50 and never had to deposit again. This is not because I am a great player but because I learned against weak competition at safe limits that were very forgiveable. I didn't start at party until I had turned my $50 at pokerstars into over $300. I highly recommend the same to you. |

- buy Lee Jones book
- pokerstars .05/.10 - read hands here take a month to assimilate the core basics first. posting hands too early may put too much aggression (misapplied) in your game. understand the PF game first. |

Biggest difference is that the games start with much lower stakes. It gives you a good chance to refine your poker skills while only risking a small amount of money. Once you get that experience under your belt you can move up and make money at these higher stakes. Pacific is another good one to start at (although recently their .10/.20 tables have been down, but they've stated that this is just temporary while they put in no limit ring games). Here's the strategy I've been following there.

what entity said, basically party's games will be better for a given limit (worse players) but party doesnt offer any limit below .5/1, so it's kind of a big leap for someone just starting out playing for money.
