Robert Varkonyi - what has he done since WSOP 2002?
Question stated in the title.
This thread is not intended as a "Robert Varkonyi sucks! Robert Varkonyi is an amateur!" topic, but rather, just to see what the 2002 World Champ is up to. I only remember seeing about 1 second of footage of him at WSOP04 (during one of the montages). Additionally, from Hendon Mob's online database, it appears as though he hasn't won any tournaments since WSOP2002. Does he play in any big cash games, or is he just doing the standard 9-5 at a "real" job? |

Re: Robert Varkonyi - what has he done since WSOP 2002?
There was a documentary on A+E sometime in the past year called Poker Kings. It chronicled the year between WSOP 2002 and WSOP 2003 and followed Varkonyi, Hellmuth, and a trio of Brits (Simon Trumper, Gary Bush, and Carlo Citroni). At the end of the documentary, they said that Varkonyi was looking into poker sponsorships instead of finding a 9-5 type of job. He came across as a regular guy thrust into the spotlight, which is what he was.

He is a world champion you have no right to even write his name. What have you ever done??? How dare you question a champion!

Re: Robert Varkonyi - what has he done since WSOP 2002?
I saw him once at a wpt event and i saw his name on the ppt tour chip counts. From an interview i read, probably cardplayer a year or two ago, he said he wants to keep poker as mainly a hobby. i think he makes an occassional appearance at a tourney or two but is not playing every big buy in event.
probably a smart thing to do. |

Re: Robert Varkonyi - what has he done since WSOP 2002?
Varkonyi said he had taken a couple of years off to play poker at the time of his WSOP victory, so I assume he was already a pro.
If you saw him playing 6/12, he is probably back to grinding a living at the same games he was playing before the WSOP. Presumably he has enough money that he doesn't have to work or even play poker for a while. I saw him on TV in the early rounds of some tournament. He had enough money to blow that his wife was playing too. She reraised allin with KQ and got called by some hand that dominated it. She then won the hand with trip queens. |

I remember reading somewhere that he did win a $1K or $1500 buy-in limit HE tourney somewhere, but I can't remember where it was.

Re: Robert Varkonyi - what has he done since WSOP 2002?
There's nothing wrong with that, though. Varkonyi hit some big hands in '02, won the WSOP, now plays a bit here and there. He seems like a smart guy, so he probably realizes his limitations and is not blowing the money. Good for him... I know I wouldn't mind that for a nice score
