Default Frontline: Is Wal-Mart Good for America?

Frontline's recent program Is Wal-Mart Good for America can be viewed here. For anybody interested in Wal-Mart's impact on the U.S. economy as well as a general look a the U.S.-China trading relationship, it's a decent watch.

BTW, I love Wal-Mart's approach to business.

In answer to the question in the subject line, absolutely yes. As you probably know, Wal-Mart single handedly revolutionized supply chain management, which is one the primary reasons they are able to offer the prices they do. It is no accident that supply chain management MBAs are the most demanded right now. Several friends of mine from the Navy who were Supply Officers got very healthy jobs in this field when they left the Navy. I worked at a Wal-Mart in high school and was very impressed by the culture there as well.

Yea. If you're inefficient and have a lousy cost structure then having competition that actually understand business is bad.

union busting, gender discrimination, and worker coercion into working hrs. off the clock are examples of efficiency and good business to you?

How about trying to force it's way into a community that doesn't want it, going so far as to change the wording on the ballot so that all the "NO on proposition x" signs created by the opposition would suddenly result in a vote FOR Walmart - (such slime tactics failed - they failed to get into the community on a vote of 55 - 45 percent)

So were you just shooting off the standard bullshit right-wing line when you made this post as fed to you by higherups or was it simply made out of ignorance of basic facts as documented in the press and court cases -

Wal-mart's abuse of workers is legendary and documented in several court cases...feel free to surf the internet. (who am I kidding...too much work for you, right?)

union busting

[/ QUOTE ] This is not only good business but is a blow against everything wrong with our society. Unions represent socialism, and a lack of personal responsibility or accountability. They're only in existence today because of weak-minded imbeciles that woulkd rather put their fate in the hands of corrupt union leaders than fend for themselves. Oh and the fact that keeping immoral union protection laws in place is an easy way to get votes.

Funny how these communities claim they don't want it there, but as soon as it opens, they're generally flocking there for jobs and to buy things, putting their neighbors out of business in the process. That's right. The customers put them out of business, not Wal-Mart.

As for worker abuse. There is no such thing, with the exception of violence. If you don't like working at Wal-Mart, or anywhere else, find another job. If you don't like the company's policies, find another job. If you don't like your pay, find another job.

My friend says yes, but thats because he is a proud manager at Wal-Mart. My other friend hates Wal-Mart because his dad owns and runs a grocery store.

To be fair, unions were a great idea, and very necessary, when they first came about. The problems started when they realized that they could abuse the system, and it has been all downhill ever since.
