Default How do you maintain focus at the B&M?

I'm struggling with how to adapt my onine game to the B&M, and I often find my myself making idiotic mistakes. Some of it is definitely inexperience, but some of it is having trouble maintaining focus and missing plays my opponents are making when I'm not in a hand. At my casino distractions include the chatty guy in the seat next to me, big screen basketball & football games, and the hottie with the big rack sitting one table over in the middle of my field of vision.

I've tried headphones but I don't want to hurt the dynamics of the table (poker should be fun), or to have people tighten up against me. Any suggestions?

What are you playing? I used to have the same problems with limit games because, at low limits (which is all I'm bankrolled for), most decisions are pretty mechanical. Now the only live games I play are no-limit and watching my opponents play hands I'm not involved in can directly lead to winning large pots off them later in the session. That fact in and of itself is usually enough to keep my mind on the game.

If you are playng at Casino AZ then I can understand your attention problem with football (they have an amazing football promotion there for all poker players), but staring at the rack of the "babe" at the adjacent table? Man, youve got to get out more often. Casino AZ has the ugliest customers I have ever seen at a casino! The girls are all(ugly) hookers, or the asian girls with really bad taste and gambling problems that generally only date high rollers and/or dealers.

Just focus. Its easy to do. Spend the whole time counting pot odds!

This one I can understand. Happened to me the other night. Don't you find that chat at the table helps you focus on the game?

Happened at a table at Foxwoods the other day. All 6 of us were in a daze staring at a hottie waiting for a table. The guys on the other side of the table didn't know what was going on.

LOL. Normally, a very true statement, but I think last saturday night was an exception. There were actually a couple hotties, and actually the one in my field of vision might have been a bit of a butterface, I can't say for sure as I was too focused on her rack.

Not at all, any chat causes me to lose track of the key decisions in the hand. Maybe I have ADD, even if I'm not distracted I have trouble following hands I'm not involved with without drifting away in thought.

Might be a good time to work on putting people on hands. Even though the reads are not all that useful most of the time, it is still good practice and keeps you in the game for a little while at least. I find myself glazing over after a few hours of this and usually wind up paying less and less attention, but by then you probably have a general feel for your opponents.
Poker should be fun, but how fun is up to you. You can decide if you want it to be fun, or if you want to eliminate those stupid mistakes. Playing good B&M poker is not exactly what I consider ‘fun’ in the party rockin good time sense, its more the challenge that I find to be fun. (and the money )

I'm the friendly, chatterbox guy at the table for exactly this reason. I can focus on what's going on at the table regardless of conversation, so I chat away to keep everybody comfortable and distracted. Not surprisingly, my profit is much higher at the casino than it is online.

Noal

You're not multi-tabling online?
