First time in a stud tournament - any advice?
I'm playing in a limit stud hilo tournament for the first time next weekend. Like myself, most of the other players will not be very sophisticated stud players, just holdem players who are learning stud. What advice do you have for someone in my position? I'm especially curious about playing at a shorthanded table. Thanks,

1) Read Ray Zee's book.
2) Read Sklansky's tournament book. 3) Try to get rolled-up a lot. |

You have a lot of heads-up pots between a high pair and a two-way low hand, or even between two high hands in spots where there is no low hand playing. On the early levels you should play just like you would in a ring game. Once the bets become significant compared to the stacks, so that going to the river would take half your stack or more, then different strategies apply. As compared with a ring game, in the higher levels of a tournament you want to focus more on stealing pots and winning hands on the early streets, and avoid chasing and multiway pots unless you're pretty sure you have a significant edge. Raise a lot more yourself, but rarely enter pots where someone else has raised. |
