Rule question

In Texas Hold em, do you use only one kicker or several?
Lets say hand 1: A K Q 7 6 and hand 2:A K 9 8 7
Do these hands split or does hand 1 win because his 3d card is higher ?

yeah i dont know where people get the idea where top 2 cards win the hand. its poker!

hand 1 wins..even if it was A K Q J 3 vs A K Q J 2
