My first B&M stud experience
I'd like to thank yall for answering my questions, I just thought you might like to hear how my experiences went.
I ended up +3 bucks for the night. I only stayed 4 hours cause I rode with my parents. The game was quite loose with usually 5+ seeing 4th street. for the first 3 hours I am fairly certain I was the only person under 50 there. I had one full house beaten by another, that cost me a bit of my stack, so I was happy just to break even. I did decent because I think they saw this 'young punk kid' (I look about 18 or 19) sit down with them and thought I was just your average fish. I neglected to tell them I recently aquired a B.S. in physics, which gave me the math skill needed for the game and that I had a bit of experience *although this nowhere makes me pro or anything. Some interesting things I saw. I had to bring in with a Jack of clubs in an 8 handed game. One person seemed to hate me when I sat down, not sure why though. Maybe it was because I was young. He hated me even more when I raised him, He bet 1 and I raised him 5. I was able to steal one pot at 3rd street with 5 people in it. Had split jacks so I raised. everyone folded. Cajuns really like thier 7 stud. One guy seemed to be a fairly decent player. He was up from when I got there to when I left about 75. When I stood up he told me I was a good player. So I'll take that as something I can work with. I'll be posting here more regurally with questions. I enjoy stud more than other poker games that I have played. And since I play for fun mainly even though the extra money is nice I'm gonna stick to it. Melch |

Re: My first B&M stud experience
I know people with degrees in all sorts of things who stink at poker. Some of the better players I know never went to college. If someone sat down at a poker table and informed me that he had just finished a degree in physics, I would probably congratulate him and ask him what was next. I would not be thinking, "this is a guy I should watch out for." I do pay particular attention to unfamiliar opponents, but most of them require less than twenty minutes to convince me that they stink.
Bringing it in with a Jack is a pretty rare occurrence. You may not see that again for a while. If this was the $1-5 game with a $.50 ante that you had mentioned previously, stealing the antes with a pair of Jacks is an excellent result in my opinion. I can't imagine going to a casino with my parents, or really, with much of anybody, because I tend to want to stay longer than a reasonable person would. I went to Foxwoods with my sister in, what was it, '01. She played through a couple of rolls of quarters and, wouldn't you know it, got bored watching me play $5/10 stud after a while. Take separate cars or something. Aren't you old enough to get your own place anyway? Hey, congrats on finishing your degree. What's next? Would you like fries with that? |

Re: My first B&M stud experience
I played with an Electrical Engineer who was insitant on giving his money away. He was probably 100 times more academically gifted than I. Like you said though, it didn't matter much at the poker table. |

Re: My first B&M stud experience
Oh I know my physics degree doesn't make me a good player. I just didn't want them to think I was all that smart.
I went there again last night and stole all the ante's. Someone asked me what I had and the dealers says, he has 5 dollars now thats what he has'. Had rolled up 7s in one hand and won with a flush. One dealer dealt a flop in our game. Wasn't sure how to play my cards with a flop like that. All I can say is that these players are bad. Several of them kept drawing to gutshots, even after I raised on the streets. I left with an extra C note, which I figure is real good at that low level. I only played for 3 hours because I felt my attention starting to wane. About my degree, I didn't spend 4 years to work at McD. I got a science degree, not a liberal arts degree . I'm moving to San Diego, I have a few job opportunities there working in research labs. Melch |

Re: My first B&M stud experience
Its kind of funny that you put it this way because you validate the other guys point when you say that you have to go to law school for 3 more years to get a good job. Basically, your liberal arts degree has prepared you for squat. Did you know you don't have to major in history to go to law school, moron? |

Did you know you don't have to major in history to go to law school [/ QUOTE ] Actually the average law school applicant with a math/science/engineering major has a better chance of getting into law school than an average "Arts Major" (read Econ/Pol Sci/History/English) But a whole bunch more "Arts Major" apply to law school |
