QJo ... raise or fold situation?

EP calls, MP calls, Hero calls, SB completes, BB checks.

SB bets, all call.

Turn q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]
Sb bets, 2 calls, MP raises, Hero?

Only just sat down, no real reads but SB seems decent.

First off - raise the flop.

Second, you have an open ended straight draw and top pair. I call here - don't raise, since you might be raising into a straight.

I think you should raise the flop and bet the turn when checked to.

Since you didn't... you still have an OESD and are getting 5:1 at the worst, more likely 6 or 7. So folding is probably a mistake, even if you are no longer drawing to the stone cold nuts.

This is an interesting situation where I might advocate a call. I think it all would have been easier if you had raised the flop.

It matters whether you have a diamond. On the flop it would be a backdoor flush draw. On the turn it affects the chance of someone else rivering a flush. Share next time.

Raise the flop with an OESD and two overcards. You have the whole field trapped and are getting great value. Huge error.

You have top pair, good kicker and an OESD on the turn. Raise for value and to pressure the many dangerous hands outstanding.

It was Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] so no diamond.

I was really unhappy with this hand, about a second after I called on the flop I realised I should have raised. Having the SB betting out and then getting raised by the person to my right on the turn I didnt want to just call and then see the SB 3-bet it... so I folded.

To make things worse SB won the hand with QJo.

Why would hero raise this flop, his draw is pretty weak. He's got 6 outs for the straight and who knows if his overs are good since they might give somebody else a straight. Since hero didn't even have any diamonds in his hand that might be another 2 outs at best. It's a pretty weak value raise here IMO.

8 outs (not 6 outs) for the straight + overcards = easy value raise. Assuming that his overcards have normal value - he is looking at 11 outs with a pretty big field. A raise with a guaranteed 3-handed turn is a +EV move. The fact that one of the guys is also holding QJo makes things a little different, but we didn't know that at the time.

I think if you play this hand you should raise it preflop to try and fold out the blinds.
I think you should raise the flop.
Don't fold the turn, you might still be good and if you're not you're likely drawing live.
